MKV files in Windows 7's Windows Media Center (x64)?

Recommended Posts

Anyone got them working? I've followed various guides, and nothing has worked.

I gave up with all the reg-hacks, none of them ever worked. Was directed towards (an apparently banned link - doh :( ) which, except for the occasional jitter, works fine.

Not much help there with the banned link. Sorry :/

That or you could simply mux these nasty little files to universally supported MPEG files which can be played back in any application. Honestly it boggles the mind what kind of nutter produces these files when the MPEG container can achieve the exact same thing while being universally supported on DVD Players, Consoles, Streamers, PMP's and even PDA Phones and pretty much any other device .

Probably were dropped on their heads as kids

I'm not very familiar with different video types and the like. Do those support chapters?

I still recommend VLC player. Windows Media Player is too much of a bloat to me, and have, in the past, lagged some of my videos due to its bloatness. VLC is pretty simple.

That said, I recommend CCCP Codec package if you still want to use WMP.

Windows Media Center.

It's in the topic title

Cmon guys!

As someone else said all you should need is a splitter, Haali Media Splitter is good (Y)

It appears to be 6+ months old and I can't find an x64 version?

Okay. Geez. I didn't see the word center give me a break. It's not like it's written in HUGE OBVIOUS FONT.

Ugh, Windows Media Center is even more of a bloat than windows media player. Still, CCCP should do the job regardless. I'm not sure how you can manage to tolerate that, but to each their own.

You can't directly compare WMP and WMC, they're serve different purposes :|

Maybe he uses a remote to select stuff to watch in WMC. I do. Can't do that with VLC.

So you admit you don't read titles before opening a thread? It doesn't need to be written in huge obvious font, it's a topic title, the first thing you should read ;)

edit: Haali Media Splitter for x64 - http://haali.net/mkv/mkx.y.9.exe All you should need, you don't need a codec pack, you need an mkv splitter.

Thread title will catch my eyes when I click on new post. It's sometimes easyto mistaken windows media center for windows media player. When I click the thread, the first thing i'll read is the post, and then the rest of the thread. Anyway, no more derailing.

Both of those codec packs contain a splitter, CCCP uses Haali. He doesn't need to install a codec pack, just the splitter.

Windows 7 has native codecs to play back H264 which will be the video codec inside the MKV file, Windows 7 however does not have a splitter to enable the use of the MKV container.

    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
    • You did take leaf out of Trumps book already and had brexit - only to harm yourself. The same goes with this AI nonsense. The obvious solution for these companies is to move their head office to Brussels. I can see quite much irony there... 🙂
    • Thank gawd AT&T never worked with the US gov....
    • Wonder if they are trying to slow down Linux traction (not saying this is the only factor) in the consumer space. With the most pressure probably being steam deck/box, etc.
