World Adventures to be the first expansion pack

EA has sent out details on the first expansion for the Sims 3. Here are the first screens and details.

The Sims are off on an adventure to famous destinations around the world! The EA Play Label of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that The Sims 3 World Adventures, the first expansion pack* to the #1 best-selling PC and MAC game in June 2009**, The Sims 3, is in development and will ship to retailers worldwide the week of November 16, 2009.

"We're thrilled with the global success of The Sims 3 over these last few months and are looking forward to expanding on the gameplay experience with one of the most robust expansion packs to The Sims yet," said Scott Evans, General Manager of The Sims at EA. "Players will be able to take their Sims on the adventure of a lifetime and explore lands outside of Sunset Valley and Riverview, pursue thrilling new life destinies in locations around the world inspired by famous destinations, and immerse themselves in the open-ended gameplay where they'll discover new cities in China, France and Egypt and share new stories."

Players can take their Sims on new journeys to famous real-world inspired destinations around the globe for the first time ever and seek out new adventures. While exploring the landmarks of an exotic city, there is no telling what the Sims will find. From mastering martial arts in Shang Simla, China, discovering rich culture and famous landmarks on a romantic getaway to Champs Les Sims, France or exploring the depths of ancient tombs in Al Simhara, Egypt, players can take their Sims on a journey that will change their Sims' lives. Players can accept challenges to search for secret treasures, learn new skills and chase down new personal opportunities, meet new Sims with unique personalities, share their culture and bring them home, discover new styles on their travels, and share everything they encounter on their adventures with the world through personal photographs, movies, and stories. I don't see an issue, the people who buy the sims are almost like the WoW players, they get so invested with it and enjoy being fed more content. Of course expansions were lined up for the game, you gotta cut the content line somewhere, and to be fair I think The Sims 3 has a decent amount of content out the box, it's very playable and deep enough.

The pricing on this will be what I'm watching.

I think it's more to do with releasing the EP so soon after the game. It's almost as if it was ready and could have been included with the main game.

It doesn't sound like it's getting released just yet, but in the pipeline.

I'm sure the expansion packs have been planned throughout the development of the game itself. I see no reason to be offended by them myself, as all of the Sims games were still very good if you chose not to buy any.

Anyone who has actually played the game will notice a distinct lack of content, it has obviously been held back for the expansions (which of course everyone saw coming). Who really wants to buy the same expansions over and over for the same game.

Just include the previous expansions as standard in your new releases and stop making mugs out of your fans.

Innovate not regurgitate and all that shizzle.

I haven't noticed a distinct lack of anything. Yes, it's an expandable framework, as was Sims 2. But there has to be a starting point for any software. You can't throw in everything and the kitchen sink before launching.

It is surprisingly early for an expansion, which makes me suspect they'd planned things for a different timeframe and the main product got delayed.

As for including everything from previous expansions...that's a little ridiculous, don't you think? If they'd spent an extra two years on the development, sure that could happen. Or, they could get a solid game out for people to enjoy now.

Only thing that really irked me about Sims expansions was how they never bothered making an ultimate package later on. Even when the game goes obsolete, you still have to install each expansion one at a time, making a mess of your computer. Like it would kill them to make a pack that ran ONE install routine to get the entirety of Sims 2 and its expansions onto your system.

Naturally if this has been done, I retract my complaint. It gets so hard to follow the myriad releases, after all.

Does that include the Complete Sims 1 collection DVD? It had all the expansions. I don't know how it installed, though.

I definitely agree. They should make whatever was in the expansion packs for the previous game and make them standard. There's no Universities in the Sims 3 and that was probably the best EP for the Sims 2.

    • I can't believe Starmer is still there...his party lost so big. He's a stubborn coot, but this is largely unenforceable, so I would imagine he'll be resigning soon. A key here is for parents to buy their kids phones sans Internet access--and set up the Internet at home, where mom and day can, you know, act like parents instead expecting the government to raise their kids.
    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
