Hi all!

Just got this email from Microsoft for those interested and needing that small 'nudge' to get Technet:!

This *might* only be available in Australia only, but it's worth trying anyway! :)

Post 4500 marked.

Cheaper to just buy 7 when it comes out, rather then spending 250-500 dollars for technet just to download it 3 months early.

About a month ago Microsoft gave me a FREE Technet Account.. and I don't really know why. The only thing I can think of is about a thread I read on Neowin---->

If some of you remember, back around March or so, there was a thread here on Neowin about how to get a free Technet account.. well I followed the instructions in that thread and filled out the Microsoft application, jumped through hoops joining different sites and listing them in the microsoft application. I never heard back from MS and just forgot about it, then about a month ago MS e-mailed me with an invite code for a free one-year Technet account, and I was shocked when the e-mail and invite code all turned out to be the real deal.. A FREE TECHNET ACCOUNT!! :woot: :woot:

So, I've been using it like crazy.. and just finished downloading the Win 7 RTM versions I wanted. :D

I was wondering, would I benefit from getting a TechNet account compared to buying 6 copies of Windows 7? I need 3 Ultimates and 3 Home Premiums. Also Office 2007 for all 6.

Would it be cheaper to get TechNet account? Is that what most people use it for? No time limits? Sorry for the newb question, I'm still not getting it even after reading Microsoft's site. I'm in the U.S. by the way. Thanks for any input.

It's like $349 US for 1 year. I figure, I could just get my keys from there and that's about it. What do you guys think? Is that legal?

not if you tell anyone they know people will be using it for personal experience anyways

In fact I'm honestly surprised this is even allowed on Neowin as it's clearly violating the EULA/TOS of Technet,

If Neowin were to stop anything that goes against a EULA/TOS (which in most locations aren't aren't legal and binding) then all the forum postings on patching the theme engine in Windows to allow unsigned themes, or patching messenger to remove the ads or change the skin would also have to go bye-bye as those types of things are also against a EULA.

I'm sure MS wouldn't be too happy if they knew about this? :p

I'm sure Microsoft would rather have someone buy a Technet/MSDN sub instead of someone using their software without paying. I think Microsoft knows that not everyone who buys Technet/MSDN are IT people or developers.

In addition to Windows 7, there are other software available if you have a Technet subscription, e.g. Microsoft Office, SQL Server, and the server OSes - Server 2005 R2 and the new one, Server 2008 is going to be released soon.

I think you get more from MSDN - e.g. Visual Studio.

    • This is needed! Good to see them working on it. My solution up until now at work is to hide all MY folders, showing only the shortcuts, but linking my personal folders to the corresponding Libraries. Having this exposed in the Navigation pane of File Explorer means that I have easy nested access to my stuff, as well as all the shortcuts under the OneDrive folder when needed, often open as I only have about 10 or so linked sources.
