I do agree with that GreyWolf. As others were saying and my friend did also. This feels like some old star trek single player game just made to play with other people around you..

Which coincidentally is exactly what I am afraid Star Wars The Old Republic is going to be also.

I will agree that the ship part if the game feels like Star Trek Armada, still don't care for the ground based, but that's cause the ground is choppy with ice skates on regardless of the vid settings I use

Gave it a try, and unless they totally revamp the feel of the game i don't think i will ever play it. The space combat is boring so far, zoom to the next enemy and just let your lasers fire. Ground combat is horrible feeling. I know it's open beta but the base feel of the game is just.. not fun.

After 2 days here's my opinion:

The game runs well on my 2.5 year old PC Win7 32Bit AMD 5600+ (2.8Ghz), 2GB Ram, GF8600GT 1280 x 1024 windowed, better than expected to be honest.

Ok disconnects are expected, and lag, after all its stress testing. I'm a patient person, especially with another monitor and firing up a DVD while waiting :p

Space combat is fun, especially in a group. Much better than Eve (4 year Eve vet) its not just warp-> target -> F1 to F6. At least in the battles I've had, and some with 3 or more in a group, can be very fun :D. Still only in the starter Cruiser which is slow, so I think I'll be going Escort.

Ground combat does need work, but I think it brings an additional element to the game. Can be clunky, but even Eve was clunky 4 years ago. MMOs do take some time to get refined.

IP feeling, its Star Trek but not as we know it. But I believe its how star trek would be if there was a war with the Klingons after everything that's happened over the time line. But its not how hard-core trekkies want it, but seriously it can't be that much fun exploring and diplo missions! For me, I love the shows (all of them) but I am no hard-core trekkie, I like action and pew-pew. So far, I'll be sticking with it :D

Well I made it to Lt. 5 last night and about 3am got disconnected and felt I should go to bed lol, I am a member of a fleet (Fifth Fleet) and they are good fun to play with and I think thats what makes the game interesting when you solo you can go in and face 3 birds of prey but in a group of 5 doing mission you have a much harder time with Negh'Var's and D'Tingas and so on.

Last night was amazingly laggy and hopefully this is something that can be balanced on their side as everyone was having the issue and chat messages took a millenia to make it through which could make organising combat in an open team an issue. Ground combat I'm still not overly keen on but it is growing on me a bit and hopefully they will spend a bit more time working on this issue before release in about er 2 weeks time...

I do feel the game has been pushed too fast and could probably spend at least another 6 months in development, especially when you consider TOR has been pushed back to spring 2011 and for me STO is more a filler than anything and something you can easily slip into which I think it accomplishes well. I still don't understand why some of the issues have appeared when in closed beta they worked fine, one example is the Una system in 'Patrol the Orion Systems' as in closed beta there were no issues with this but suddenly in open I have done this 2 times and completed it, even had my officer say it's all done and yet no recognition for this and it's all I need to finish it!

I won't overplay open because then when release comes it'll only serve to make the game less exciting, but they really need to do something about the ground missions, because talking to settlers and asking questions or simply gaining data from 4 scanners is boorring and frankly a waste of my time, but I can understand why they are in the game as not every mission is combat based for a Starfleet Captain and it does add some diversity if I am honest.

As I have said before it's still beta so I am patient and accepting that there are going to be a lot of issues that need fixing but I hope people stick with it and give it the time it needs to mature because half the problem these days is everyone expects WoW (bearing in mind WoW had a LOT of issues in beta and launch) and not every MMO can come out all shiny and polished, WoW certainly did not and still is not in my opinion and has many issues with it.

If anyone wants to chat to me in game you can contact me on: Raktael@Raktael and I'd love to talk to some Neowiners.

if anybody wants to group feel free to send me a message ingame

Ankah of the U.S.S. Blight

i play mostly from 8pm East Coast to 3am East Coast Mon-Fri, 4/5pm - 3am Saturday, all day Sunday

if youve played Star Trek Bridge Commander ( awsome game ) its the same thing ( but you can customize ship/loadout )

Ground Based Missions kind of blow though ( due to stuttering problems )

I like Star Trek but I could never get into any of the video games they made. They all bored me. The screenshots look good though.I'm sure some will enjoy playing this.
How did you guys get beta keys? I must've looked everywhere and I can't find any without having to sign up as a premium user for some random site.

http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/star-...ine/closed.aspx

It is now closed tho. That's where I got mine.

I can agree, Lag and rubberbanding where much better last night. I had no disconnects :D

I did have a client crash after a mission, and the mission ended up incomplete and had to do it again. Tried again, client crashed again but at a different part...well it is beta and its bug reported ;)

Still enjoying. Although you can play solo, which was my plan, I think I'll be looking for a fleet if I can't get 4 mates to join :p

The space combat seriously gets my inner-Trekkie on. The ground combat is decent but nothing special. Thankfully most of the stuff I've done so far is space based heh. Either way, hearing the computer tell you your hull is below 50% or the forward shields are down is just awesome (and it's great that they used Majel's voice for it - or at least someone who sounds JUST like her).

Not to mention firing all phasers and launching quantum torpedoes just rocks. Oh and everytime I go to warp I get a hard-on :D

Im not a huge trekkie but thought this was a pretty cool concept when I first heard about it. I was quite taken back to learn it would actually be out soon but from all indications (fourms and previews) it sounds like its been rushed out the door by the publisher :\

There is crafting, apparently. I've not seen it in Open Beta.

As for Eng Game I have no idea.

@LOC ...lol..simply lol :D

Tried some PvP was just as LOC describes space battles :p

Seriously, every time I go to warp I giggle a little :D

When is this patch due out?

Sometime this week supposedly, but who knows. It's gonna be a biggie though.

Well I play this everyday and I still go back to saying there are WAY to many problems for it to be released Next month. I mean there are a TON of stuff we haven't seen or tested that needs to be there.

I LOVE the game so far, and want to purchase it, but I am too afraid it is being rushed.

My problem is that it feels like there is no community. Really reminds me of playing some offline rpg / space combat game. Sector space is just dumb, there is really no exploration...It's click somewhere on a map, and warp to randomly generated planet / space battle that took them a few hours to design...They at least need a central area where players can all hang out, the earth space station would be alright, but the instances make it feel like there are only 100 people playing the game at the same time as you. It would be nice if areas in space actually existed, rather than randomly appearing for a few hours. I think if fleets could own parts of space, settle down in a certain area, it would really add to the game. Weapons are rather limited, there are just different levels of them (mk 1, mk 2, etc). I feel like everyone is more or less exactly the same when it comes to skills, I don't feel like there is really any specialization whatsoever. He has photon torpedoes, that guy over there has photon torpedoes, my grandmother has photon torpedoes, our ships all look the same, do more or less exactly the same thing... Anything you do in-game, has absolutely no effect on anything else, since it is the same stuff everyone else is doing - warping to sector space and completing a randomly generated npc mission. I can't imagine myself taking a different adventure / path in the game as some other random person, because the paths simply aren't there. This game is flat out linear and boring. I think with some additional content it will be much better though.

I do agree with some of your comments PricklyPoo. Again it goes back to it seems by matter of opinion that most people playing seem to get the feeling this game is more of an RPG but with played online so you see other people playing the same game at the same time.

    • I'll wait for the root cause analysis. Looks like it's HP, Lenova, and certain configurations that are askew, hardly "all of windows." Time will tell.
    • Loading Topaz Photo AI freezes my system since this update...
    • I had issues with my NVME, it was running really slow (like 2/3 mb bandwidth) ... had to reverted via System Restore and all is fine now.
