I'm noticing in the increase of people ignoring rules set out in the first post of each month's desktop thread.

- Images are being posted too big to suit dialup users and broadband users with usage limits (especially me!). I'm seeing more than 1mb per image. The rules says under 100kb.

- People posting desktop images without information about the desktop or linking to a copy of wallpaper used in the desktop.

- People linking posts WITH images in them forcing us to scroll more.

What's up?

Posted a reminder about keeping the images around 100k. Also I have removed some large images and replaced them with a link instead. While I can't monitor this thread all the time, I will pop in and check when I have time.

Spoke my mind, I skip this thread altogether for these very reasons. Also asking for a wallpaper is like praying to god you might never get an answer, the poster may never care or your tiny post will be lost beneath those huge un-thumbed billboard posts.

I'm guilty of this. I'll keep this in mind the next time I post my desktop picture. If I could edit my post in that thread I would.

I don't remember where I get my wallpapers. Though I suppose whenever I post my desktop I could upload my wallpaper as well. I usually say what OS/VS I'm using though. People who PM me for the actual wallpapers/VS I sometimes send it to them/upload it for them if I can't find the source.

I personally love people posting the images in the topics themselves. this way i dont have to go around clicking on all the links to see the images. I can click on the ones i find interesting to see them bigger.

So, either way, the point of the topic is to see people's desktops, so you'd be clicking the links viewing the images/using the bandwidth anyways? Right?

I didnt even know dial up was still even around.

+1, I love scrolling through the images. I would be less likley to click the link to a screeny in every post

Same here :/

As much as I can see this would be annoying for people with slow broadband or Dialup I hate having to click to see any part of the screen. I like the images posted in the thread.

That's what broadband is for :D lol

I support the original poster's point regarding image sizes. It seems like every other screenshot on the monthly desktop threads is in the megabyte range. People post 5MB PNG screenshots of their dual-WUXGA setups without any consideration for other people who may have slower connections or monthly caps. I love discovering some cool new wallpaper or desktop gadget on these threads but on every page I load, I find myself wishing there was a Firefox extension to block images over a certain size.

PM?

True say, but isn't the whole point of posting on the thread is to share? If the initial poster posted the correct info in the first place, not only would it save having to send a PM, but multiple people can benefit and the poster's PM box doesn't get inundated with requests!

I didnt even know dial up was still even around.

Only about 70% of world people have broadband. Even in countries where there is broadband, there are still quite a number of towns still stuck without broadband equipment. For example, my area only just got broadband enabled back in 2006 (only 3 years ago!). So trust me there are so many people still stuck on Dialup even though they really want broadband.

I don't see why it's so hard for some people to not post info and links along with their desktops. And if they don't know where the wallpaper etc. came from, why not just upload it to Localhostr or something a-like. People who do know where the items came from will probably reply to the thread with said info.

Also, bAsKeT cAsE, that's the soul purpose of a thumbnail, though you're just clicking on a large thumbnail. A thumbnail should represent a part of the desktop, making people curious about how it looks. It can also contain the whole desktop so that people see what it might look like.

I rather just see everyone use thumbnails and links to visual styles, wallpapers, icons and all those other things. It'll make the Desktop thread a way more pleasant thread to visit and share/show stuff. The thumbnail thing will not only help users on Dialup or any other slow connection, but it will keep the thread nice and clean which ultimately makes it easier to find/read stuff.

There's a good Thumbnail service that I use created by The Decryptor which is useful for the Desktop Thread.

On the wallpaper issue I usually just right click and say set as background on firefox and don't save it so most of the time I don't have it to hand.

I actually never knew that  and wouldn't know where to look either haha

Right click desktop and then Properties > Desktop > Browse. You'll then see the location of the wallpaper.

^I already understood that from the previous post. I just wanted to tell Rappy that it's pretty easy to find out where the wallpaper is located and then upload it for others.

    • Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 PC case is now 33% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 is currently $109.99 on Amazon, down from its original $164.99 list price. That's 33% off and $55 saved on this premium aluminum mid-tower case with a modular design. If you're upgrading your PC case and want something that doesn't force you into a rigid layout, the MasterFrame 600 is worth a look. The case is built around the Cooler Master's FreeForm 2.0 platform, which lets you reconfigure the internal structure according to your hardware. Magnetic side panels allow for straightforward adjustments, and the case supports everything from Mini-ITX to E-ATX motherboards without compromise. There's also generous cooling headroom. Four pre-installed PWM fans handle airflow out of the box. GPU clearance goes up to 410mm, and the case supports radiators up to 420mm with room for three simultaneously. Truth be told, this might not be the prettiest case on the market, but it’s highly functional. The aluminum construction keeps the whole thing lightweight despite its size, and the finish looks noticeably better than the plastic mid-towers competing at this price point. If you want a serious, flexible case that prioritizes function over flashy aesthetics like RGB lighting, the MasterFrame 600 delivers at a reasonable price.
