True say, but isn't the whole point of posting on the thread is to share? If the initial poster posted the correct info in the first place, not only would it save having to send a PM, but multiple people can benefit and the poster's PM box doesn't get inundated with requests!

I thought it was to show off, not (necessarily) to share.

I actually never knew that  and wouldn't know where to look either haha

Rappy, you just opened yourself to a whole can of worms!

I guess, either way though, most people who don't want to release just say NFR.

Personally i find that "under 100k" thing to be kinda dumb in this day and age. This isn't the year 2000 where everyone is still using 1024x768 and 100k could cut it. Nowadays people have high res monitors. And have you seen how even a small(ish) 1440x900 image looks at 100k? It looks awful. Now imagine someone with a monitor higher than that(say 1920x1080). They might as well not even post an image cause it would be an ugly, super pixelated mess. I understand those people still using a dead technology, or those with a bandwidth cap. But such a low size limit on a thread that almost guarantees high res images defeats the purpose of it.

The answer might surprise you...

The Poll is a year old, but you get the idea

@Blackhearted: Who says you HAVE to upload the screenshot to Neowin? If it's too small, why not just make a quick thumbnail and add a link to the screenshot. It's quiet annoying to load a page with loads of screenshots at full size.

@bAsKeT cAsE: You can pick a screenshot which you'd want to see, instead of seeing loads at once which you don't even want to see. Do you really like to load all those images at full size everytime you visit the desktop thread? Btw, if everyone had the attitude "thats how we feel it works better, and we enjoy it that way", how would this forum turn out if everyone started to ignore written rules like the ones in the desktop thread? I

If you attatch a screenshot to the post, doesn't it resize the image with a thumbnail anyway to prevent the entire image loading if you don't click on it? :/

No, it loads the whole image, then resizes the image. It doesn't make a thumbnail of the image. It's just the full image scaled down, so it's the same size as the whole image.

I was going through the thread this afternoon and on the last page, one screenshot was 1.9 MB. It actually froze up my browser (and I have broadband). In order to make the desktop thread usable, you really should create a thumbnail before posting. Otherwise, the entire thread becomes difficult for a large number of readers....

I rather just see everyone use thumbnails and links to visual styles, wallpapers, icons and all those other things. It'll make the Desktop thread a way more pleasant thread to visit and share/show stuff. The thumbnail thing will not only help users on Dialup or any other slow connection, but it will keep the thread nice and clean which ultimately makes it easier to find/read stuff.

Amen, brother!

That's a pretty lame way of doing things, suppose its been designed that way to reduce server overhead (creating a thumbnail actually uses quiet a lot of memory in PHP)

Some people here don't think about others but only for themselves! Especially +bAsKeT cAsE.

What I always do is have two screenshots. Both of the excat same thing. One is the normal size, and another at a smaller size made comfortable to view on common screen sizes without resizing or using up so much bandwidth. I post the smaller one on neowin with a link to the larger version.

If uploading a thumbnail or doing the bbcode thing is too much for you, you can try Rightload (http://rightload.org/) which is free.

It'll ask you if you want a thumbnail also and if you select yes it will link the the thumbnail to the original image with whatever formatting you want.

It's a very helpful program if you do a lot of image uploading to forums, your own site, etc.

Even though I'm on a broadband connection sometimes pages take forever to load due to the super big pictures some users post. I agree to both the size limit to be enforced and that users should try to do their best efforts to post a link to the wallpaper.

+1 to this program very useful when I make posts in media section and the ability to create thumbnails is very useful!

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.3 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display.
