PS3 Media Server Thumbnail Generator

Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded my ps3's 80GB hard drive to 500GB hard drive, the reason of me doing this is because i want to have all my videos and movies stream straight from the ps3 hard drive, i do not like media servers due to my slow internet connection so i rather keep it this way.

Does this Thumbnail Generator work with my current setting?

I do not want to create folders, i want each movie file with the thumbnail, i wish ps3 created a more appropriate media center look and feel like apple tv since i believe the ps3 is such a wonderful console and it kills anything out there, hehehehe.

I will truly appreciate any help because i have no idea how to make the thumbnails work, i tried everything and nothing.

Thank You

Sadly no these will not work with the standard PS3 XMB media view. These can only be seen when used in conjunctin with the PS3 Media Servr. I like you wish that it was possible, sadly the best you can do is manually create the thumnails a bit further into the film so that they don't all just look like the opening of a movie.

It's just you. The button that says Save Thumbnail clearly opens a save dialog.

I'm not stupid, I've done this before, but for some reason now it says "select location for download by www.worldinhidef.com"

and I've got Cancel and Open as the options :s

Hi, I know this is specifically for PS3MS but does anyone know how to get these to work with a ReadyNAS Duo running ReadyDLNA? I think ReadyDLNA only supports .JPEG format for cover art so when I convert the .PNG obviously I get a white background to my thumbnails. I have posted the question to the ReadyNAS forums but am wondering if someone here knew of a solution? unsure.gif

Well there isn't really much of a solution, JPEG files don't support transparency. I guess depending on the background of the main software you could match it up with that?

If anybody out there could please help me, i have had absolutely no luck in getting the thumbnail pics on my ps3. I am trying to add thumbnails to the DVD movies I have on my computer in the Vob format. If someone could post a guide or a tutorial, that would be awesome. THank you very much

Great app and site. But I have not been able to get thumbs to work at all. I use windows 7 and the new beta version ps3ms with my playstion 3 up to date. If someone would post a screen shot of them getting this to work under the same circumstances then i may not give up but this is really buggin. Example: although there are no file types displayed in win7 i still used (Igor.mp4.cover.png) in same folder as movie. Is this wrong? I even have different formates of the movie and have tried that (Igor.mkv.cover.png). What my deal? Help please.

Will PS3MS let you set a cover image on a folder?

Yes.. it should... you have to name the file I believe "folder.png".. but the downside was (at least when I used PS3MS) that folder.png cover will be used for all other videos inside that folder.

This was meant more to be for TV shows and such.

I tried that, and it does apply the thumbnail on all the videos in the folder, but the folder itself on the XMB doesn't change.

Out of interest, what are you using now instead? Have you ditched the PS3?

Yeah.. since the release of ultra cheap ATI 5xxx series with HDMI and audio bitstreaming for DTS-MA and DTS-HD, I have decided to simply build cheap HTPC..

I built 2 $400 HTPCs (one for home theater room and one for living room) that play Blu-rays and rock Windows Media Center interface but with all the codecs installed and outputting through HDMI to my receiver.'

This allows me to get full HD audio and video but I can play it as m2ts without any transcoding.

I'm actually thinking about building a very cool custom made UI for my movies and transfer everything online to database and open that to users.. So you would download an Adobe AIR application, that would read all your movies and stuff and would play it (in Windows I am trying VLC as a main player as it is compatible on OSX too) and supports all imaginable codecs.

From there I would build an iPad, Android tablet, Blackberry Tablet and iphone/android app where you would also browse your collection but could also use it as a remote to play your collection.

Right now, something similar is only present on Plex but it's for OSX only.

Boz, has this project died? I remember you mentioning that you were looking into getting it to scan your libarary and auto generate. Did you ever get that going?

Also don't feel it hurts to bring this back to the attention of others, as this is a great little site for adding the finishing touches to your collection. Sadly I'm now in the same situation as Kraized and running a ReadyNAS Duo so the transparency is lacking :(

    • Still 3x what it should cost. So, it seems the trick is to increase price by 6x so that a reduction in price back to 4x looks like a steal. "You savvy shoppers win again!" I'm glad I'm not in a desperate spot to actually even need this overpriced crap. Hopefully, it comes back down by the time for when (or if) I ever do.

    • Microsoft wants to end printer driver headaches with Windows Ready Print by Usama Jawad A few days ago, Microsoft released Windows 11 Experimental build 26300.8553, bringing a ton of enhancements such as Start menu customization, search improvements, Taskbar polish, and other minor UI tweaks. Another relatively major enhancement snuck deep within the change log was related to upgrades to the Windows printing experience. Now, Microsoft has shared more details about these benefits. For starters, Microsoft has renamed its Modern Print Platform to Windows Ready Print. The company believes that this name highlights its shift in strategy, which now focuses on modernizing, securing, and streamlining the printing experience for Windows devices. Some of the upgrades present in Windows Ready Print have already been seeded to customers and partners. This includes ending support for third-party printer drivers via Windows Update and transitioning towards the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and the native Windows IPP printer driver. In line with these changes, new printer installations will default to Windows Ready Print on eligible devices starting from July 2026. However, Microsoft recognizes that not all environments will be able to migrate to this platform immediately, so it will allow users to choose between installing the printer via Windows Ready Print or the traditional OEM process. Users will be able to toggle this configuration through Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners > Printer preferences. This control applies only to new printer installations, and its functionality can also be modified via Group Policy as follows: Launch Group Policy Editor Navigate to Local Computer Policy -> Administrative Templates -> Printers Find and select 'Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking' -> double click to open it Select 'Enabled' (if you wish to enable Windows Ready Print driver selection) or 'Disabled' (if you wish to explicitly disable Windows Ready Print driver selection). Select Apply Select OK Similarly, if you set up Windows protected print mode through the same setting in Windows 11, it will also default to using Windows Ready Print exclusively. Microsoft hopes that these improvements will help eradicate dependency on OEM-specific driver installation processes and simplify printer installations. We'll likely find out more about other tangible benefits in the coming months.
