A few minutes ago, the Ubuntu development team unleashed the sixth and last alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) operating system, due for release in late October this year.

As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it in order to keep you up-to-date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 9.10 development.

What's new in Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 6? Well... first of all, there is no more Usplash (the boot splash screen). So it appears the the team has successfully managed to fulfill their initial plans for making a faster startup where a boot screen is no longer necessary. Therefore, when Ubuntu will start, you will see a black screen, after the BIOS POST, followed by the X-based splash screen (xsplash) that we've presented a few weeks ago. If the login manager is enabled, after login... xsplash will appear again (this time, loading the desktop in the background). Here is the new X-based splash screen everyone was waiting for...

Secondly, the Ubuntu Software Store application is now present and it is available under the System menu. Its appearance has been greatly improved for an easy usage, but the basic software installation, search and removal functions remain. Take a look at the next screenshots to get a better idea...

So, the new splash screen made me jizz. What I'm really excited is that they've made the splash screen darker than the Alpha 5 release, so I'm really hoping this is a sign of a new theme. This might be true, because if you read the whole article, you'll see they're going with a darker look with Xubuntu as well. The Software Store looks actually nice. I'm very satisfied all in all.

Hmmm hmm .. um waiting for the final version ..

Software store... Talk about a cheap way to try and capitalise on the success of Android and iPhone.

I'm not sure if I follow you there. Linux distributions (Mandriva and Linspire, for instance) had software stores long before iPhone/Android were even around.

And it's obvious that you if want to get something you either make it yourself... or go to the store.

They have just changed the name to 'Software Store'. Its essentially no different to the package managers

does this mean we dont have to see all the linux loading code crap at start up anymore?

Which is a really good idea to see all of what is happening when your system boots.

Personally I liked the Red Hat or Mandriva way better, it showed boot progress in a pretty way without hiding the messages. In Ubuntu I only use "vga=792" as additional kernel parameters to change resolution on the tty.

Gentoo's boot messages ftw. (Y)

They currently have suggestion dialog prompts if you need special codecs and crap-like that link you to the vendor's website.

This basically a remix of the Add/Remove Applications tool (PackageLOLNoControlKit) integrated with a store like Linspire's Click-And-Run's and some cleaner descriptions and donate.

It won't surely hurt my apt-get; aptitude; Synaptic, but it's going to be important for all the users that like fancy props and want proprietary paying software.

Never run it, but by looking at the screencast looks good and really fast. (Y)

Is that artifacting on the BIOS screen?

With KMS coming along there soon there will be no more need for kernel parameters like vga=792 and the overall looking of the boot process will look a lot smoother. Native resolution, flicker free, etc.

Oh, for the love of Pete, I hope they drop that damn brown color scheme! I'm tired of having my distro look like turds because the developers are too set in their ways to come up with anything else. But hey, now that I think about it, they could just throw in some flowers for decorations, maybe a teddy bear here and there, slap on a different *buntu name, and market it to women! Brown = chocolate = female orgasm!

There's a Hannah Montana Linux already out there :D
