Australian fans face booze limit

Australian police are gearing up for an annual crackdown on motor-racing fans - limiting race-goers to 24 cans of beer a day.

Spectators at the Bathurst 1000 - a three-day race meeting staged this week - will be told to stick to just the one "slab" of beer while at the racetrack.

Wine-drinkers must also show restraint, facing a four litres per day limit.

Police hope the limits will prevent the famous New South Wales race being blighted by alcohol-related violence.

Known as "The Great Race", the Bathurst 1000 is a 1,000km (621 mile), three-day race held annually in the town of the same name.

Boasting a long, proud history, the race - seen as the most prestigious motor event in Australia - is currently contested by teams of drivers racing powerful touring cars equipped with V8 engines.

The "one-slab" limit was first imposed in 2007, with police insisting drunken hooligans were tarnishing the reputation of the race and causing disruption in town.

Those choosing to drink lower-strength beer will be allowed to bring in 36 cans, police said.

Pilgrimage

The limits - and a tougher police presence around the racetrack - were greeted with dismay by some race-goers when they were first introduced.

Many fans making the annual pilgrimage continue to feel they should be able to drink as much as they like while watching the race.

But police insist the limits are necessary. Alcohol has been blamed for violence elsewhere in Australia, with drink seen as a factor in sparking race-related riots in Sydney in 2005.

"This is one of the greatest motorsport events in Australia and for some it is a pilgrimage that they make every year," Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke said.

"Police respect people's rights to enjoy the race weekend, but will promptly act when the law is broken.

"Every year thousands of race fans attend and enjoy the event and police will not allow their safety to be compromised by a drunken few.

"As such we will once again be focusing on alcohol-related behaviour," he said.

lol, exactly what I was going to say.

Also ONLY 4L of wine.

When I read the title I was going to come in here and post something along the line of "boo whoever keep making these rules for australlia" but ONLY 24 can of beer a day? What a harsh limit.

We Aussies are smart, and usually hide our beer/spirits/whiskey/vodka in smart ways. Not to mention at Bathurst they usually sell beer at the race, so as long as you have someone half sober with you, alcohol and buying it isnt a problem.

How do you plan to hide more than 24 beers? and I mean seriously do you really need more than 24?

usually hide them in door trims, spare wheel etc. 24 beers a day isnt much for a normal aussie motorsport fan.. Hell ild probly drink 2 cases to myself over a full day event.

I hear cavity searches are now being brought in. You're made to jump before entering and if you clink or clang (depending on whether you've got bottles or cans), on goes the rubber glove and copious lube!

Surley you could get your girl to drive that day so you can drink and then get her to also bring a case thus giving you 48 cans. Problem Sorted!

Also 24 cans of beer is to much to be drinking anyway. Im not sure how strong ausie beer is but 24 tins of Coors or Stella over here would have you totally Bongoed for a week!

And Im Irish, we like to drink!

    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
    • I can answer about the Linux bit. I only used AMD GPUs. I currently have a 9060XT (8GB) that fits my needs, I'm not a gamer, so I don't need that much GDDR. But lately, NVIDIA has grown a lot in the recent years. Oh, the horrors of NVIDIA drivers not working. But they have been getting better. I know a lot of members onm here that are running cachyOS and other distros, and are fine with a 4090/5090 variants. Really, though, I would stick with AMD variants.
    • Everything they say you can already do yourself on the registry by changing some things.
    • Artist's renderings are so much nicer to view than the real thing, don't you think?
