Miyamoto: Nintendo

Nintendo dev lord Shigeru Miyamoto?s told Popular Mechanics that motion control will most likely stay for the company?s next console, but that everything?s going to be? squished.

?My guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient,? he said.

He added that the motion-based interface is now familiar to the masses.

?What we?ve been able to do is introduce an interface that is both I think appealing and at the right price for a broad audience,? he said.VG247/"]VG247[/url]

I read that as: Wii HD confirmed.

I doubt they'd release a "proper" new console being smaller then what the Wii currently is, that's gonna be really hard to do. So, I'm guessing it's going to be a Wii HD with a 1.8" DVD drive in there, to make it as small as possible. He's also probably meaning shrinking the internals of the parts inside the Wii and Wiimote in general, too.

how can they have a 1.8" dvd drive, that can't even play the games of the Wii right now, that would destroy backwards compatibility. Whatever system they come out with has to at least physically be wide enough to support a standard dvd sized drive definately.

I also doubt they can get HD components into a smaller package than the current Wii. At the minimum they will need a better graphics card than the one they have now and it's going to run hotter just because which would mean the need for better cooler, which usually means more space. If they can get a HD capable system into a smaller form factor than the current Wii, that also supports the current Wii games, i'll definately be amazed.

Huh? I'm pretty sure a 1.8" DVD drive would be able to play DVDs, considering, it's a DVD drive. 1.8" drives are shorter, no width taken off.

DVD discs are circular (12cm x 12 cm or about 4.6" x 4.6"). Unless more than half of the disc ends up hanging outside the case then they'll need something deeper than 1.8". It's only the height that doesn't really matter.

It doesn't really bother me how big the console is, as long as it looks nice and isn't bigger than it needs to be. I like the look of my Wii and my PS3. The controllers could be improved and they really really need better graphics. I love Mario Galaxy but it bugs the hell out of me playing it on my 60" 1080p and seeing jaggies on EVERYTHING. I don't expect the wii to come closing to my pc gaming rig but come on.
