Datel’s expressed “disappointment” at Microsoft’s decision to disallow use of third-party 360 memory units in the console’s November software update.

“We are following this issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else,” a rep told CVG.

“If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we’re disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice.

“Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official Memory Unit.”

Major Nelson said earlier this week that only Microsoft memory units will be supported after the update goes live.

Anyone else remember buying these bad boys in the PS1/PS2 days? Sony wanted like ?20 or ?30 for an 8MB memory card, the likes of Datel sold a 64mb for like ?20. Heck I bought a 3rd party Gamecube memory card for my Wii when I got it.

Guess back then there was no way for them to be blocked. I always thought Datel and the likes had to pay some sort of licensing to MS as they were sold in retail shops? No?

People still use memory cards?

Let alone, third party memory cards...

I think there are far too many people getting upset over this decision when it doesn't effect them.

People are complaining because there is a chance that this could mean hard drive modders might no longer work, we'll have to see what happens.

^^

I don't think Microsoft really cares for people who modify their consoles. It is a risk people take when they modify hardware and pirate games.

^ I think pairing hardware modifications and pirating games in that context is irresponsible. Just because someone likes to tinker and use a larger and faster HDD does not make them a pirate.

Think you'll find a memory card (that you can use two of at a time) is more convenient for taking round a friends house than a hard drive.

Yup I have my profile on a 64mb memory card for exactly that, much better than recovering my profile every time we get together to play some Xbox.
