Rumor: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?

Recommended Posts

We've just received some exclusive news and specs on the Wii 2 via Logic-Sunrise.com) (though a Nintendo of France marketing employee). The leaked specs denote the Wii 2 will get a Blu-ray drive (mainly to stop piracy), but will also support 1080P for games as well as movies. The new system is due out during the third quarter of next year and there will be the option to trade in old Wii's!

More details below (translated from French):

This is a nice exclusive we have here at MaxConsole courtesy of Artik from www.Logic-sunrise.com on the Wii 2. The actual information is said to have been leaked from an internal source of the marketing Nintendo France Service. Unlucky for them, this kind of information should stay internal, but that's not our philosophy.

- The Wii2 system will feature a Blu-Ray drive with a secondary aim of stopping piracy.

- 1080P and lower resolutions will be supported, for blu-ray movies and games.

- The release date is scheduled for third quarter of 2010.

- The release will be worldwide and on the same day for all countries.

- A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2.

Moreover, Nintendo wants to make a worlwide annoucement, only one month before release date. Huge publicity and Viral Marketing will be utilized to create the Buzz. Official pictures are not yet available, and more specs will be released in due course.

Why do we believe it at all ?

* Artik from Logic-Sunrise.com has regularly provided news to MaxConsole and has a lot of 'insider' contacts.

* Nintendo has suggested that it's time they embraced high definition technology for the Wii and Blu-ray has firmly established itself. So a Wii 2 with Blu-ray support does make sense.

Well, there you go, a Wii with the power of a 360/PS3 - a real winner! :D And if the rumors that "traditional" next generation consoles will only arrive in 2012, the Wii 2 will give MS and Sony stiff competition even before their consoles are out.

With the power of a 360/ps3? doubtful.

No doubt the graphics will be the same, just able to be boosted to 720/1080p properly.

Though personally I would still take this with a huge grain of salt.

I don't think it's that far fetched, PS3 down at $299 is a pressure to all other consoles, MS can keep on the cheap with the Arcade model, but Nintendo is left in a rut charging $199 for a piece of hardware that's nowhere near on the scale of either the PS3/360.

Then you have the PS3 Wand and Natal coming out next year, both pieces of kit will most certainly steam limelight from Nintendo as they are powered by more impressive pieces of hardware (and are newer technology themselves).

Nintendo will have the shortest cycle till their next console, doesn't mean the Wii won't stay on the market, it will.

There is no way that nintendo would give sony money . Putting blu-ray playback in the next wii is exactly what that would be doing. If the first wii doesnt have dvd playback why would wii 2 have blu-ray playback?

And here we go with another misconception many 360 fans fall for, Sony don't own Blu Ray, they helped create it is all.

There is Blu Ray licensing fee's, but there was DVD licensing fee's as well.

As for why would Nintendo adopt Blu Ray? Well consoles nowadays are packing everything into the box as competition for space under the TV heats up. Blu Ray is still fairly new technology, while Nintendo could argue you most likely had 18 devices that could play DVDs in your house when the Wii came out, try that same argument for Blu Rays.

And thats why the wii doesnt play dvds. It uses them for data. The same for wii 2 theyy wil lread games off of it but will prob not play movies because of the license needed. How am I a 360 fan when nintendo themselves stated that as the reason why the wii doesnt play dvds

A little too late for what? It's still selling very well.

New owners may be buying it, but previous ones are not playing it much. Thus meaning that not playing it a lot will influence their decision on whether or not to buy the Wii 2.

I don't like the Wii having a short life cycle, but it was the most underpowered console this gen (if you want to consider it this gen material).

I didn't say you were a 360 fan, I said the issue of concluding Blu Ray is just Sony's format is something a lot of 360 owners say when you put the question of Blu Ray being in the next Xbox on the table.

They think "Oh MS won't pay Sony money". It's not Sony being paid, it's licensing paid to the BDA.

It's an easy mistake to make considering Sony went all gung-ho with Blu Ray in the PS3 and now people think of the PS3, then Sony when they think of Blu Ray. However it's irrelevant that Blu Ray is in the PS3, MS/Nintendo will use whatever technology is most beneficial to their next consoles, and lots of other manufacturers now release Blu Ray equipment (in terms of hardware drives to choose from for the console, they don't need to work with Sony at all, they could put LG/Hitachi/Samsung or Pioneer drives in the console).

I gave you food for thought as to why Nintendo may want to pay the movie licensing this time, other consoles becoming powerhouses in doing everything under your TV, and Blu Ray still most likely not having mass house penetration next year (might have one or two players in the house, but not 16 DVD players like we have now).

Is it April 1st already?

That was my first thought as well.

This doesn't fix the fact that most games on the Wii are utter **** and boring for any "hardcore" gamers (minus the first party exclusives).

Amazing that the PS2 sold as many as it did, 'cause they certainly had utter **** for most of their shovelware also.

    • So they saved ton of money by using AI resulting in loss of crap load of money in recalls and expenses. Bravo. Management needs to be replaced by AI, not engineers.
    • Ditto that, I have a few Alexa devices around the house to control lighting and such for a disabled person I live with, and it shows a *lot* of ads on the display. The dots are simple but effective. A lot cheaper too.
    • Go for a Echo Dot or Pop instead. These Echo shows just advertise to you.
