Do I need the wheel for mariokart?

I was going to get a used copy of Mariokart for the Wii but it doesn't come with the wheel. I was wondering if it will work just as well without the wheel just using the remote?

No it just makes it easier for kids, and some adults :p

I have the wheel and don't use it, I like using the wiimote with the nunchuck.

I find the nunchuck and wiimote easier to use than the wheel.
