what the hell is happening with Neowin?

Halloween is limited to the under 10's in this country. If older people actively celebrate it, it's very weird. Teenagers (or even older) trick or treating or wearing halloween outfits gets the police called sometimes. Haha.

So, kids celebrate it.

Ha! I didn't realize it was a pumpkin till I seen this thread also!

It'd be nice to see neowin more into some of the global major holidays, just maybe a general theme set that they use each year.

But, I do understand that you guys have better things to work on, and hopefully lives outside of neowin. :p

That must just be in Manchester, I've seen others generally doing stuff for Halloween.

I'm not saying others don't do things, I'm just saying it's considered to be a bit odd by the general population.

I'd definitely be telling an older person (Say over 10) to go home and grow up if he trick or treated at my house!

I can't find the option to state I'm not a Yank. I guess I forgot the US is the only place on Earth to some.

Can you find the option to turn off global ignorance? Halloween didn't originate in the United States.

Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, [it is] more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain or Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)".[4] The name is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end".[4] A similar festival was held by the ancient Britons and is known as Calan Gaeaf (pronounced kalan-geyf).

Snap-Apple Night by Daniel Maclise showing a Halloween party in Blarney, Ireland, in 1832. The young children on the right bob for apples. A couple in the center play a variant, which involves retrieving an apple hanging from a string. The couples at left play divination games. The festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the "lighter half" of the year and beginning of the "darker half", and is sometimes[5] regarded as the "Celtic New Year".[6]

The celebration has some elements of a festival of the dead. The ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin on Samhain, allowing spirits (both harmless and harmful) to pass through. The family's ancestors were honoured and invited home whilst harmful spirits were warded off. It is believed that the need to ward off harmful spirits led to the wearing of costumes and masks. Their purpose was to disguise oneself as a harmful spirit and thus avoid harm. In Scotland the spirits were impersonated by young men dressed in white with masked, veiled or blackened faces.[7][8] Samhain was also a time to take stock of food supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. Bonfires played a large part in the festivities. All other fires were doused and each home lit their hearth from the bonfire. The bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames.[9] Sometimes two bonfires would be built side-by-side, and people and their livestock would walk between them as a cleansing ritual.

Another common practise was divination, which often involved the use of food and drink.

The name 'Halloween' and many of its present-day traditions derive from the Old English era

Im all for decorating the site, just do it right. Having a lil orange when the majority is blue looks very out of place.

It's only there for around 1 day...

That excrement-brown header really looks way past disgusting :x(N)

How long is this going to stay? Just so I know how long I'll have to avoid the front page.

It's only going to be here whilst Halloween is still on in some countries, so not for long :)

I love this by the way :D It's always a bit of fun (Y) I'm currently dressed as a smurf, but the body paint is all patchy now as I've only just got back home, haha.

Neowin is trying to be fun and festive for a day and the people are angry and rioting... geesh. Lighten up people.

I thought it was a nice change from the traditional blue. Wonder if there will be any color changes for December.

    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
