Does your (June 2009) 15" MacBook Pro right speaker sound louder?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been playing around with my 13" macbook pro and the screen estate is really insufficient for my use. In os x its fine, but in windows I find it lacking. Playing videos on it is not enjoyable as well. So I decided to cough up another A$300 for the 15" instead with same specs but larger screen and battery. Oh and not having a dedicated mic-in is seriously annoying.

I found out on the apple discussion forum that users have this problem of the right speakers sounding louder than the left. Do any of you guys have this problem?

Hmm just to reply my own thread, I bought the 15" already and there seems to be a slight bias thats hard to detect without trying (due to the bass speaker being located there) but its not overly annoying or anything.

Hi there.

My new one has the same issue. Do you have any documentation regarding how the speakers/subwoofers are placed in the macbook pro 15"? like a picture or something like it? (i cant seem to find any on google).

Well I just assumed from the ifixit teardown that the two speakers are under the left and right grille. As for the subwoofer, I believe its just under the arm rest (to the right of the trackpad) due to the huge amounts of vibration underneath.

The subwoofer actually produces some mid treble as well so that I believe is the cause of the bias.

Yeah, it does look like it. I hope its not just the two of us that are experiencing the issue? do you know if its documented anywhere else?

The only other place i have seen, is this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?t...30&tstart=0

Oh, somewhere else, its also stated that you should try and hold it in your palms, and you can feel more vibration from the right side, because of the subwoofer being located there. Let me know what you find out.

Yeah I tried out with lots of music and movies and it vibrates only underneath your right palm which means the third speaker is there. It gets more distinct as you go louder.

I tried out the store's macbook pro 15" before I swapped my 13" in and it had a slight bias too but I wanted the screen estate.

So far I encountered many quirks with the 15". The lid closes by itself if you use it in the bed, the sound is biased, the hinge clicks and is not flush with the body. But then again I'm just very particular with stuff I spend so much on.

Yeah, i tried it out with a couple of other 15" in various stores. they all seem to have the issue. If you get a chance to try it out on some other machines, let me know what you find out please! I dont have any apple store close by, so its hard for me to get access to other machines.
