Microsoft: Pirated Win 7 Causes Malware Outbreak

You've challenged my information in over 5 threads now.

You've also been proven wrong and it's been proven your information is lacking severely.

I haven't. Most of them have been filled wi th complete nonsense, and your refusal to listen to anyone means I, like everyone else, just stop bothering to post. For someone who's been on the net for 20 years, you sure are paranoid. Just because people post in the same threads as you or respond to a post of yours, does not mean they're on some mission to antagonize you. In fact, my response would have been the same regardless of who wrote the post. Either you're overly paranoid, or you just think the whole world revolves around you.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/virii <= you're wrong again.

The plural virii, though common, is generally considered to be incorrect, and based on a misunderstanding of Latin.

If you say so.

If you have a problem with this, I suggest you take it up with Oxford.

Warez sites, yes. Anyone stupid enough to use warez sites is a stark raving retard.

I have no idea at all what point you are trying to make. In fact, you're agreeing with me now that the warez world is filled with malware and that Microsoft's point is perfectly valid. For the overwhelming majority, pirating software constitutes a very real risk. In fact, I've seen plenty of self-proclaimed computer experts get infected the same way. It is not just the fake warez sites, it is also wildly popular torrent sites.

They're not unpatched. I'm saying the vulnerabilities exist in windows programming and MS has to continually release critical security updates to protect their own software.

I'm aware that Microsoft releases patches for their operating systems. Not all are critical security updates though, not that it matters. Also, a patched vulnerability is no longer a "current vulnerability." Sure, it poses a risk to those that haven't upgraded, but the vulnerability is no longer current.

Again, most viruses do not exploit any vulnerabilities, but rather rely on exploiting the user. What do you base this 3/4 number on?

According to Wikipedia, there is no plural for Virus. So, I guess both of you are wrong in some way.

On topic: I think there are tons of Windows versions being distributed/sold that contains virus, spyware and whatnot. And with the relevance the GA of Windows 7 has had, is not surprising that people and downloading/buying these versions.

About the person that mentioned that Microsoft prefers people to use pirated versions of Windows than other operative systems, I kind of always thought that too. I would prefer people to use pirated copies of my software than the competition's.

There is. I scanned in the definition from an Oxford dictionary (something that is traditionally considered an authoritative source, even though language is dynamic) for you. There isn't one in Latin (which none of us are writing in), but there is one in English.

People pirating Windows does help Microsoft, but I suppose there has to be some sort of balance and that it depends on the region/market. I don't believe they put the anti-piracy measures in just for show. It seems like they really do want to reduce piracy in the viable markets.

Most people who pirate don't have the knowledge and experience to tell what is safe and what isn't. They just download random things.

I disagree with this theory and would actually go so far as to say its the opposite, I've seen more land lovers affected by negative factors than pirates and who is to say that windows update or anything that Microsoft offers is enough to defend them from Malware... no one.

I guess this argument as always comes down to which user is more intelligent and my wager is always on the warez monkey for reasons that I have mentioned previously furthermore most warez user seem to have a test box from what I have seen or run things within a sandbox and give it a good test before they fully take the plunge where as your average Joe will be running the so called best antivirus money can (which is probably the worst) or better yet none at all because they are just plain ignorant or take the word of a commercial outfit suggesting that free isn't better when in some cases it actually is.

I said most people who pirate, not the tiny ultra-elite of pirates you describe. My estimate is that 99.99998% of those who pirate (even those that pirate a lot) do not fall into the category you're thinking of at all. They're just regular people that want stuff from free. In fact, when you look at the comments on various torrent sites, you have to wonder how many people there manage to use a computer at all without all the drool shorting out the keyboard.

Microsoft blames pirated copies of Windows 7 for the high rate of malware infections.

Yesterday Microsoft's Jeff Williams, the principal group program manager for the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, said that there is a direct correlation between the current malware infection rate and software piracy. To be more specific, he said that countries with high piracy rates are more likely to be infected by malicious code because they're reluctant to apply updates.

His theory is based on Windows and the security updates that consumers are neglecting to install through Windows Update. Microsoft's latest biannual security intelligence report, found here, claims that China's piracy rate is more than four times than that of the United States. France and Brazil also have extremely high piracy rates, and each country--including China--use Windows Update significantly less than consumers in the U.S.

Really? I don't see anyone here complaining

    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
    • On my music making (non internet) PC Sony Acid Pro 7.0 Adobe Audition 2015 Korg Legacy Collection Windows 7 SP1
    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
