u need to set up file and printer sharing and give each pc a static ip address. then make the folders you want to access shared in the properties dialog. then connect the 2 pcs and it should just work.

to accesss a share named shareddocs on ip address 192.168.0.2 for example, type in \\192.168.0.2\shareddocs into explorer

1. goto network connections, right click on local area connection, then properties. then in the new window that shows click tcp/ip protocol. then click properties. Put in an ip address try 192.168.0.1 (for one machine and 192.168.0.2 for the other. NOTE: you can get it to automatically do it but i prefer to set it myself). for the subnet mask set as 255.255.255.0 for both machines. Ignore the rest of the settings and click ok.

2. test the connection by going to run, type CMD, and then click ok. in the console window that comes up type "ping 192.168.0.1" (NOTE make sure you use the right IP address of the machine that you are NOT using!!!) this simple tests the connection between the current machine and the other machine you have connected the crossover cable to.

3. right click on my computer and go to manage. then expand all the items until you find shared folders. expand that and click shares. right click in the pane on the right and click new file share. go through the wizard and include full access to everyone. remember this share name!!! (NOTE this is to be done on the computer with the files you want to be transfered from, make the share folder the folder where the files are)

4. On the machine you are transfering the files to goto run and type "//<ip of othe rmachine>/<sharename>"

this should then open the corresponding folder where the files are you want to transfer on the opposite computer.

Good luck and hope this helps!

p.s. from that open folder just transfer files as though you would on a single machine
