Firefox overtakes Internet Explorer 6

Recommended Posts

Many a user has been looking forward to Firefox's arise, and the latest numbers seem to confirm its ever growing popularity. September figures showed Firefox trailing IE6 by 1.4%, whereas October saw Firefox beating its fierce competitor by 1.2%.

It's well worth noting that while IE6 is pretty old by anyone's standards, it still remains the most popular version of IE as versions 7 and 8 command 18.6% and 20.5% of the market, respectively.

World-wide browser usage figures still put IE (all versions) at 64.64% and Firefox at 24.07%, but Firefox has finally managed to beat the most used of the lot - IE6, which is definitely a milestone in its own right. (Not really... sub.ed.)

October usage statistics figures put Safari and Chrome at about 4% whereas Opera stands at around 2%. It's also interesting to note that only Opera and IE saw decline in popularity in October.

You can find detailed statistics here.

So you're comparing all of Firefox usage to one version of IE? Why not compare Firefox 2 (or 1 if you want to go back 2 versions) to IE6. It seems like juggling numbers just to claim a fake milestone.

Yeah, but if you do it right where's the sensational story?

I'm sad to see so many people using IE6. This is why we can't use transparent PNG's without worry...

at least it is no longer a dominate player as it use to be

sites like youtube , facebook .... etc is dropping support.

the only one who is really stuck with IE6 is those who use Win 2000

If people start loading Windows XP mode into Windows 7 won't that increase the amount of IE6 users? Windows XP Mode comes shipped with IE6 does it not?

i am not sure if i get loaded

but it only count if you use it in browsing

edit: guess i will try it myself to find out

Well, the last time I checked xp mode, better said, the first time I checked xp mode it had ie7 or ie8. Now it has ie8 because of the automatic updating.

no it is not .

i just checked by myself , IE6 is installed by default

IE7/8 is hidden in windows update site and dont get installed by default

-----------

but no worries ,i bet no one is going to use except for legacy applications

It's still an achievement nevertheless.

One version of IE against all versions of Firefox on the market... Not much of an achievement. They should really compare the most commonly used versions of both, however IE6 dying will be good for all web developers and users alike

No it's not... it have been a high priority update for months.

Not in XP Mode. In XP mode Internet Explorer 7 and 8 are hidden, they are like that for a reason. A lot of people using XP mode are using it to have Internet Explorer 6 in Windows 7.

When I first installed XP mode, IE8 was offered to me as soon as I opened Windows Update

Well that's odd because the behaviour for XP mode is meant to be that Internet Explorer 7 and 8 are hidden. I've loaded a few machines with XP mode and none have been offered 7 or 8 :/

enter Windows update site , and check for hidden update . it is there if you went it

Also with me...

that is just bizarre

Those sites dropping support probably adds reasons to NOT upgrade for businesses though...

Yes, but all Firefox versions are better than that one version of IE. It's a step forward, albeit a minor one.

    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
