Apple Officially Going to War Against Jailbreaking

Those ones who said, that they will drop the iPod touch because of this. I was wondering did you buy the iPod touch to jailbreak or because it is an mp3 player (mp4 acually)????

Offcourse, Apple might hurt themselves. But I know for certain, where I work I know there are over 200 iphone contracts and LEGAL iphones..where I am the only one who hack jailbreak mine. So they will lose me and only me if I do what a few of you would. Do you think this will hurt apple in more then 1% loss on iPod/iPhone??? I don't think so...

The iphone/iPod itself sells itself because it is more realiable (sp?) then other smartphones. And people who buy the iPhone, can affort buying a APPS for it...so Apple will not worry about those few thousands...But doing so, Apple will create a more secure OS and Product. I think that is their goal. If hackers can do what they are doing now..Those hackers now are doing something "good". You may get hackers that will do something "bad" and crack iphones with iphones, and I think Apple will not take that chance...

I see it that way. I can understand Apple move. But it hurts me at the same time. But in a few months I will buy a new legal one anyway...sooo

Quite frankly everyones bitching oh no apples going to loose lots of customers by preventing this f-apple they suck at life etc... However what company doesn't try and protect their platform all phone manufacturers do it. Quite frankly if Apple wants any serious people to use their phone they need to do this and secure the platform. Sorry fellow users of Neowin and other people out there bitching and moaning about Apple. But for the most part you are not the real business people out there nor do you represent the core market that Apple is going for. They go for the general public out there with the 15 year old girls who like shiny new things and that make them the cash cause their parents have it and they're now taking aim at the business / enterprise users. CEOs have better things to worry about than if their sweet new iPhone can be JailBroken what they care about is having a phone that works and that is secure and someone isn't going to be able to gain access to their device. The JailBreaking / Hacker / Homebrew crowd isn't the financial backing of the iPhone.

For that matter a lot of those people who do actually have JailBroken iPhones have it because they don't like AT&T not because they want to have all these Apps on there. The cyda interface is quite clunky and nonintuitive for the general public that they wont even use it. With AT&Ts exclusive contract supposedly ending soon this will be a non issue.

I got the same feeling when I jailbreaked my phone.

I understand why Apple is doing this though. If they can't control the platform at least fairly well, the carriers are going to start asking questions (if they aren't already).

Jail breaking expands the capabilities of the iPhone exponentially. Essentially it allows a user is a collection of features and abilities that would take apple at least 4 more generations of iPhone to add and some that apple would never add (aka theming)

Yes, it can be used for negative purposes, but at the same time it makes the iPhone such a superb platform - it opens it up as a true computer and lets users use it as a full computer allowing them to customize every corner to their satisfaction.

I agree Apple should stop app piracy and unlocking. But I think it is a waste of time to play this cat mouse game. There will be never a winner.

trying to prevent a jailbreak is like challenging experienced hackers that their phone can't be cracked.

Actually there was no app store before, so the main reason was to have a way to install apps on the iphone.

I had my iPod jailbroken before the App store existed, now I don't see the need to do it anymore.

In fact, everyone I know with jailbroken iPhones and iPods only do it to get free games and apps, not for the homebrew aspect of it.

Exactly, 100% agreed. This was the reason I jailbroke the first time on 1.1.4, but after that I was reluctant to do it again. I eventually crumbled and did it again on 2.2.1 for the theming aspect and then 3.0 came out. Now I'm on stock software not seeing the need to jailbreak again.

If Apple allowed for theming then that would reduce a large portion of the jailbreakers, so why don't they do that? Much easier if you ask me :)

Why don't they allow theming? The same reason Microsoft does not allow theming or apple on OSX

the iPhone with its home screen icons and black screen is iconic. If they allowed the users to change that, that would be a nightmare on marketing and advertising the phone.

I guess due to UI issues, as they've spent a lot of time tweaking it. If things got broken because of some odd skin, or icon set, would they give support?

It raises a lot of questions people don't normally think about.

The only reason i am JB is because i have the 2G and need it to enable MMS and Video, for that reason i am thankful for it but if i had a 3GS i wouldn't even bother.

If Apple does end up stopping jailbreaking, you can bet a ton of people will just end up moving over to Android. Apple are only hurting themselves by doing this. I, for one, would drop my iPod Touch like it's a hot potato.

I honestly think Apple is being selfish and stupid by not allowing other carriers to use their iPhone. They would be making a ton of money if they allowed others to carry it. I guarantee you that many people would just love to dump their Palm phones for an iPhone.

Yea, I know what he said...I can read. Was commenting that if they were that concerned about about pirating...they would secure their own apps. Used OSX as an example.

iWork uses a serial code, as does QuickTime. Pretty sure Final Cut Studio has some sort of big anti-piracy measure too. Besides, if they weren't concerned about pirating, surely there wouldn't be any DRM on apps from the app store?

Personally I jailedbreaked my phone the other day and quite honestly don't find any use for it. Figured I'd give it a go to see how it was and don't find anything amazing about it. Anyone have recommendations for stuff to install?

It's been a wile since mines been jailbroken, but I had some emulators and a terminal (which I never used). Oh, and Cycorder! Huge bonus for me as I don't have a 3GS. There's other utilities too. If I had a 3GS that would be my biggest reason for jailbreaking gone, but playing Playstation games on the bus would be cool.

I think this thread proves that's not true. Removing Safari wouldn't make sense anyway, it's a key selling point and was originally used instead of the App Store for custom-made apps.

The only reason i am JB is because i have the 2G and need it to enable MMS and Video, for that reason i am thankful for it but if i had a 3GS i wouldn't even bother.

Themeing: I can't stand the little square icon on a black background look.

Cydia: Tons of apps that aren't possible in the restrictive AppStore.

SBSettings: Essential app. Allows you to toggle on/off many things like bluetooth and wifi to save battery life with ease, Process manager - kill unwanted processes, Free Ram - free's ram, great to use just before you play a game - better preformance, and many others.

Categories: - Categorize your apps by type into folders. Reduces clutter and no pages and pages of icons.

Supreme Prefs: Unlock tons of settings not available by the default settings app.

Safari DL Plugin: Download files directly to your phone.

Mobile Finder: Finder on the iPhone. This with the Safari DL plugin make your iPhone like a mini computer.

Many, many more.

So again I ask, what's not to like about Jailbreaking?!?!?

Instability, needs to be restored frequently, can delete essential parts of the phone/player unintentionally (I managed to delete a ton of apps through adding and removing them from the BossPrefs dock).

Never had instability problems, never had to restore. You're problem was user error/not properly researching how to use the app before doing so. Can't blame Jaibreaking for that.

People don't jailbreak for piracy, they do it for reasons highlighted here

I don't think they get it. People love to customize. Look at how Firefox has taken off and that's partly because it allows so much customization.

That is the reality, my point of view also, comapnies need to learn to let people to whatever they want with the techy they bought. To be controlled, no one wants this.

Just a pratical example, MS Vista was made for new hardware, and people dont like to be pushed, they like to run things their way, to have control of something we buy is very very important.

The main reason they are doing this is because of Piracy. A lot of the users who Jailbreak are also pirating applications and it has been made ridiculously easy.

Truth of the matter is, the iPhone is marketed at the masses who are not tech savvy enough to know what jailbreaking is.

I'm sure Apple will lose many customers due to this "War Against Jailbreaking" as they should lose customers. But I don't think it will hurt them as much as many of you seem to think that it will.

I haven't jailbroken my phone yet (maybe I'm not techsavvy enough), and I'm pretty satisfied with it as it is. With this recent news I'm probably less likely to jailbreak it in the future....i'd hate to taste the forbidden fruit and enjoy it too much lol. But when phone upgrade time comes up it will definitely play a role in my decision. Probably switch just to try something different. I'll probably go back to Verizon wireless, too.

You're not tech savvy enough?!? Download blackrain. Connect phone via USB. Hit start. 5 mins later, you're jailbroken and ready to go. A monkey could do it.
