Do you trust Google Chrome?

I really like the speed and minimal design of Chrome, but I have this lingering fear about Google secretly observing and collecting data about all my browsing habits as well as any forms I may fill out online. Am I the only one who feels this way? Is it at all justified these days? :p

It would be pretty silly of Google to put tracking code in their browser, then release the source code of it.

People also thought the crash reporter and the anti-malware stuff was tracking them too, neither of which were correct.

Read the EULA. If you don't agree with it, compile the latest builds of Chromium. Fear = gone.

For all the paranoia regarding Google, there's been no fallout incidents to justify it so far. And Chrome's a really great browser.

I don't use Chrome at the moment but I have used it extensively. I see no need to worry about Chrome or Google.

Actually, if you look at the original source and compare it to the SRWare Iron source modification, you'll see exactly where in the mod that the tracking code was removed.

That being said, no, I don't trust Google.

I think you have the order wrong. The code is available as Chromium which is available to the public. Google then takes this code, modifies, compiles and distributes it under the name Chrome. Under the BSD license, they only need to include a reference to a copyright notice. That's it. They do not need to release this modified source to anyone. That's where it's sneaky. People are led to believe that because the source code is available it's trustworthy and that the code has been audited by an objective party.

That being said, no, I don't trust Google.

Amen. Anyone who would blindly trust any company is foolish and suspect. A certain level of skepticism is required at all times.

I know theres that tracking bit on Chrome and Chromium build so I go for third party builds like Iron and Chromeplus.

I trust it but don't like the fact that Google does not give me control over (auto) updating and that Google Update crap installs if you install the usual way using the web installer.
