Pre-owned Console or New?

Recommended Posts

I know I created another thread earlier, but just thought I would create anew one with the correct title :p

Basically, my wife wants a xbox 360, we already have a PS3, but there are some games that she would like to play that are only available on the xbox. (yes I have a great wife :p )

Anyway, a new console with HD is basically the Elite (?199.99), some shops still have the 60GB (?159.99). Some places have pre-owned 20GB for ?109.99 with 12 months warranty and are manufacturer reconditioned. Linky

Is pre-owned worth the risk? e.g. RRoD

IMO you have as much of a chance of getting a RRoD with a new one as you do an old one. Only thing would be with a new one you could probably get a Jasper unit, where as with the pre-owned you probably won't be getting one.

Jasper's basically one of (if not) the latest hardware revision of the console. Including 250mb onboard memory and some other features that we dont really need to know :p

I have a jasper, it's quiet, cool and I haven't heard of many jasper units getting RRoD at all :)

A little shameless advertising here, but if you decide to buy a used one, I'm selling a 360 that's the revision before the current one (someone can tell you what that is, I have no idea :p). Still has at least a month's warranty for any fault, plus another 2 years on top of that for RRoD.

Thread's over in the NeoBay if you're interested :)

personally i wouldnt get a used one, cause then you run the chance of getting a unit that was modified and banned. then your SOL

Pretty much this, the used console market for the 360 just became a minefield with MS banning between 600k-1million 360's as of late.

Yeah, those game places really don't care about the condition of the console (i.e. when I traded in my old dying Pro, the I'd cracked the hard drive case open to fix the little push mechanism which kept getting stuck instead of sending it away - they didn't care about the broken warranty sticker at all).

IMO - especially with the bundles you can get now - go for the new Elite.

Never ever buy pre-owned especially consoles. I used to work for gamestop long time ago and I saw the worst of the worst. Practically ever refurb we sold came back within 1 week. Used systems came back most of the time as well end just end up becoming a refurb later on. Its just not worth it for the money you are spending. At least with a new system you have the piece of mind that you can get it replaced or fixed because you have the warranty info. Lastly the number 1 reason not to buy anything pre-owned is this. You dont know what the previous owners did to the console. I remember working at gamestop and a lady brought in a console to trade in that was infested with roaches. We made her leave the store and for her to never come back to that location ever again. It took us forever to get rid of the roaches she brought with her.

I wonder how many of those pre-owned consoles are from people who got it banned from XBL, or if they check for that.

If its from gamestop chances are they arent going to check. They usually just test it enough to see if the console powers on and maybe loads a disc. Thats about it.

With the announcement of all the consoles that Microsoft banned, I expect the pre-owned market is going to be floooooded with banned consoles starting now.

With the various bundles and deals that you can get on new consoles there's really no reason to not buy a new one. Unless you're willing to take the risk of getting a banned console, or a broken/malfunctioning one, just to save a little bit of cash.

Mine is almost a year and no RRoD.

    • Wow, Microsoft IS cooking lately... This only shows that they COULD improve, they just chose not to for whatever reasons. That obsession with AI was destroying them from the inside out.

It closes the remaining gaps with qBittorrent and fixes the Windows settings/tray/splash issues several of you hit. Fixed Settings now actually save. A whole class of preferences — speed limits (and the alternative limits), max active downloads, seed ratio, listen port, max connections, DHT/uTP/encryption, VPN interface, kill switch and proxy — weren't being persisted and reset to defaults on every launch. They now round-trip correctly. (Thanks to everyone who reported "the upload limit always goes back to 0".) Splash and tray toggles stick on Windows. Turning off the startup animation (or "close to tray") no longer reverts — the Windows registry stored these booleans as integers and the UI was misreading them. Close-to-tray hint. The first time the window hides to the tray you get a one-time notification, so the app doesn't look like it vanished (Windows 11 tucks new tray icons into the overflow). macOS Dock icon size. The icon filled its canvas edge-to-edge and rendered larger than neighbouring apps; it now uses the standard safe-area padding. Native file picker language. The "Torrent file / All files" filter in the open dialog follows the app language instead of being hard-coded. Added — qBittorrent parity Alternative speed limits toggle — a turtle button in the toolbar flips your throttled limits on/off instantly, independent of the scheduler. Follow system theme — switch light/dark automatically with the OS (Settings → Appearance). Pre-allocate disk space — reserve the full file size up front to reduce fragmentation (Settings → Downloads). Recheck data on add — optionally force a hash check when adding a torrent, so existing or partial files on disk are detected. Port status indicator — a 🔴 dot in the status bar shows whether your listen port looks reachable (UPnP/NAT-PMP + listen state; fully local, no external check). Add torrent from URL — File → Add torrent from URL (Ctrl+U) fetches a remote .torrent and routes it through the normal add dialog. Export .torrent — right-click a torrent → Export .torrent to save its metadata file. Already there (in case you missed it) Watch folder — auto-add .torrent files dropped into a monitored directory (Settings → Files). This release just surfaces it. Incomplete files already carry a .!bt suffix until they finish. Under the hood Regression tests for the settings-persistence and Windows boolean bugs. A new Qt Quick Test harness covering the startup splash and the design-system widgets. • Disabling open on hover, great! That was so stupid! They need to do a fix, where if a network share is disconnected, it doesn't hang when opening "This PC" for 20 seconds.
