Console Versions of Modern Warfare 2 Banned in Russia

I saw the link, but Sethos prompted me to explain the reasoning behind my opinion, so I did, no need to get your knickers in a twist.

I wear boxers.

While reports of a ban may have been untrue, Activision did say that they made a decision to remove that specific level from the copies of this game sold in Russia. They were being naive if they thought they could get away with it. If they didn't think of it then that's just bad market research, plain and simple.

I'm confused. Are the terms "Russia" and the "USSR" being used interchangeably now?

I thought Russia only existed since the break-up of the USSR, when parts of the USSR were freed and got their independence.

No, it cannot be used interchangeably. Russia has been there way before than the formation of the USSR. Using USSR to describe present day Russia would be like saying Czechoslovakia or East/West-Germany to describe those present states, usually by people who don't know any better.

Terrorism has happened in more than just Russia, *cough*9/11*cough*USS Cole*cough*

I'm not trying to downplay the tragedy, just stating facts.

And also, the in GTA, you can actually go into a FICTIONAL airport and slaughter everyone if you wish. I have played through MW2 and I personally was more bothered by the US military (mainly the brass) than the Russian Ultranationalist faction.

Cause you're American, of course you'd be more bothered by the fact the US military has darker secrets than killing some random foreign civilians in some foreign airport. You have a point though, they should really make a game on 9/11, make a play on it or something, the more Americans you kill the more points you get. What? It'd just be a game right?

(I'm not Russian... I just know world politics/history.)

The whole level was stupid and WAY over the top anyways, if shooting really started at an airport within 5-10 minutes it would be mostly empty, yet in the game each time you turn a corner there is a fresh crowd of civilians who only decided to start running and screaming right then so you can gun them down at point blank range rather than 5 minutes before when they would have heard the gun shots and probably could have escaped.

The whole thing just screams of trying too hard to get some controversy, I mean before even playing it you get a message saying BTW THERE IS A LEVEL IN THIS GAME THAT MIGHT OFFEND YOU. The whole thing just seems really stupid to me.

The game specifically says that the person who did this Markarov is loyal to no country that he is only out for blood and money nothing else and to the person saying that terrorism is real in Russia it's real here too 9/11 was terrible and then there are smaller acts that never get covered like pipe bomb mailings and things like that.

This topic really was funny to come back and read after playing the level (Y) Thank you members for the laugh. Especially those patriotic about the Russians fighting against terrorism and throwing out every US stereotype in the book, while defending their own stereotypes. Very creative (Y)

I havent played the game yet (no money) but how would Americans feel if they were portrayed the same way?

Exactly what I was going to say.
