Hellacool
I need recommendations for an external drive for my wife's new iMac 27" I want something that requires zero user intervention. I want it to turn on when the Mac comes on and turn off when it turns off. I want to set up time machine for her to keep her machine backed up to this drive. 1TB is required. Hellacool
western digital or seagate are good ones. I need to confirm the auto sensing option. I have a Seagate on my PC, it will shut off when the PC shuts off but comes right back on 30 Mins later.

Hellacool
what country? people may then suggest products and cheap places to order from USA. The goal is simplicity and reliability.
Elliott
A Western Digital My Book works perfectly. It'll shut off and stay off while the Mac is sleeping/shutdown and turn back on when the Mac wakes up/is turned back on. It'll also spin down until it's needed by Time Machine or something else. Qoogirl
I have the Western Digital MyBook (1TB), I recommend it, OP! Slightly on and off topic: Does anyone know how to partition this into 500GB and 500GB; Partition 1 for Time Machine Back-Up, Partition 2 for storage (not for Time Machine back-up...essentially, files I'm 100% ok with losing like videos or PDF documents I've used in my papers for schoolwork). Guest
I have two Western Digiatal My Passport Essential's which both work great :). Does anyone know how to partition this into 500GB and 500GB; Partition 1 for Time Machine Back-Up, Partition 2 for storage (not for Time Machine back-up...essentially, files I'm 100% ok with losing like videos or PDF documents I've used in my papers for schoolwork). Spotlight > Disk Utility > Once it opens select the external HDD and click on the "partition" tab. From there you can setup partitions.

einsteinbqat
I suggest G-Technology drives; speedy, reliable, well-designed. (They were recently got taken over by Toshiba.)
