External Drive iMac 27"

Recommended Posts

I need recommendations for an external drive for my wife's new iMac 27" I want something that requires zero user intervention. I want it to turn on when the Mac comes on and turn off when it turns off. I want to set up time machine for her to keep her machine backed up to this drive. 1TB is required.

A Western Digital My Book works perfectly. It'll shut off and stay off while the Mac is sleeping/shutdown and turn back on when the Mac wakes up/is turned back on. It'll also spin down until it's needed by Time Machine or something else.

I have the Western Digital MyBook (1TB), I recommend it, OP!

Slightly on and off topic:

Does anyone know how to partition this into 500GB and 500GB; Partition 1 for Time Machine Back-Up, Partition 2 for storage (not for Time Machine back-up...essentially, files I'm 100% ok with losing like videos or PDF documents I've used in my papers for schoolwork).

I have two Western Digiatal My Passport Essential's which both work great :).

Spotlight > Disk Utility > Once it opens select the external HDD and click on the "partition" tab. From there you can setup partitions.
