Apple Already Working on Mac OS X 10.7 Development

Recommended Posts

1000% correct.

There are always features that slip and get moved to the next code branch, which usually becomes the next release.

Another Pro Tip: Often times, software developers may be working on the next TWO major releases. Think about the old Windows projects of Whistler and Neptune. Happens frequently.

Pro tip: All software developers start on the next version after the latest is out. Some parts even before.
Windows 2000 = Windows NT version 5.0

Windows XP = Windows NT version 5.1

Windows Server 2003 = Windows NT version 5.2

Windows Vista = Windows NT version 6.0

Windows 7 = Windows NT version 6.1 (don't give me Microsoft's BS about it being version 7.0, since nearly every place you look in the OS reports it as 6.1, so that's what most users see)

How exactly is that different from the way OS X version numbers are presented?

windows server 2003 aka XP SERVER Edtion

5.1 and 6.1 to preserve compatibility

for the matter of fact , ME, 95 and 98 were all 4.x(not mention NT4.5)

If the Beatnik Brigade are dumb enough to pay for patch fixes, Apple will charge for them! :p

Microsoft would do it too, if they thought they could get away with it. Luckily, most Windows users aren't so gullible.

A lot of people say 7 isn't much more than a patch for Vista. :D

You are right about most of that, however there was no NT 4.5 version. I was mainly comparing the version numbers of Windows since OS X was introduced.

i confused NT3.5 with the 4.5  sorry

Not this again ...

updates are always good i am wondering if in the next version by then if they are going to migrate towards touch screens on most if not all devices. it would be interesting to see what they would do with the interface between man and machine however they did patent the 3D interface a year or so ago.

If changing the Kernel version by 1 really breaks that many software....maybe they need to figure something better ;)

Maybe 3rd parties shouldn't use the kernel version to ID what version of Windows is being run.

Patent? Perhaps... But they sure as hell didn't invent it. 3D interfaces have been around for years, so prior art there will just get any patent thrown out if they ever try to enforce it.

Maybe 3rd parties shouldn't use the kernel version to ID what version of Windows is being run.

I don't think the problem is the fact that they're IDing the version they're running on but refusing to run if the version doesn't match (eg: if it's higher that it should, I can understand not running on a lower version but not higher)

 Tell me, which Windows XP service pack incorporated features like Expos?, Dashboard, Automator, VoiceOver, a built-in dictionary/thesaurus/Wikipedia browser, Parental Controls, QuickLook, Spaces, Time Machine, Grand Central Dispatch, Exchange integration (oh, which in all ironies of ironies, still isn't in Windows unless you buy Office), etc.

Oh, and I guess Windows 7 is a waste of money because it's just Aero Snap, Aero Peek, Aero Shake, few rearrangements here and there, and under-the-hood speed improvements?:pp

Service Packs in OS X are free. They're the 10.x.x releases. The only difference here is that Apple releases OSs more frequently than Microsoft does.

Don't waste your time, the guy is a troll - if he can't work out how version numbers work, all the explanation in the world isn't going to bridge that gap between the lack of knowledge and realising he lacks that knowledge.

One might as well label Windows 7 as Service Pack 3 for Windows Vista, or Fedora 12 is a service pack for Fedora 11, or the latest car from GM is a service pack for the previous version. Take his view to the logical extreme and see how untenable it is.

They shouldn't use Cougar for a name. When I think of Cougar, I think of hot 40 something women that I would shag. OSX Cougar will ruin that.

Person 1: "Mac OS X Cougar is out!"

Person 2: "I'd tap that!"

:p

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
