Smoking voids Apple warranty?

The tar and nicotine slime layer on and inside can cause illness.

Nicotine is in same class as an insectoside and highly addictive and poisonous.

When the engineer(s) have to do a repair and maybe a clean, their health is at risk.

I suppose they can wear a bio-hzard suit and breathing apparatus, but that should not be the case.

Oh good grief, if I can afford to use a simple face mask when cleaning a computer, I'm quite sure a department that handles computer repair services will be just fine. Besides, don't people pay a boat load of money for the Apple care thing? Hell, knowing how expensive there products are as it is, I think Apple could certainly afford face masks or even bio-suits for that matter.

ummm, those pictures you people are pretty normal for just about ever damn computer outside of the pc enthusiast world, even the ones that dont come in contact with smoke. Also, if you cant honor the warranty, dont offer it. I find it funny that some of you people would even attempt to defend apple on this.

Yes, because teeth are sensitive electronic components.

bull****. My mother had a baseline Dell (average ventilation) for 4 years, never opened and cleaned until I finally put in a graphics card, and there was a bit of gray dust covering the fans and openings, but that was it. What people are posting is NOT normal. The difference between a PC in a smoke-free home and a home of smokers is like night and day.

There is a line that needs to be drawn. Depending on usage conditions, laptops can build up a large amount of dust inside within just a few months of use. If the computer is on 24/7, there may be a large amount of dust inside.

Tobacco smoke, as you all should know, has a tar component. The tar also gets into the computer and makes internal components oily and sticky. This increases the amount of gunk buildup. After two years, you really can get something that looks like fuzzy black sludge, because the tar also sticks to the dirt.

At that point, I'd probably also tell the guy to take a hike.

That computer has CPU Cancer!

I assume apple computers come without thermal compound then since their employee's can't handle it due to it containing items from the OSHA hazardous chemical list. Even silicon is on that list.

Without actually determining the amount of nicotine present to see if it's above the recommended level it's nothing more then an excuse.

It's like saying that owning a pet voids your warranty because some of our employees are allergic to pet dander, so we're not going to bother fixing it.

You're a great example of the hysteria that has been built up around cigarettes by anti-smoking groups. Listen to yourself, it sounds like you're describing Ebola. Smokers are exposed to far more nicotine for their entire lives, if it was as dangerous as the anti-smoking lobby insists it is wouldn't smokers be dropping dead after even a few days of exposure?

Fast food will kill you faster than cigarettes!

Meanwhile, I don't see OSHA classifying car exhaust as dangerous. They're letting us all be exposed to death every day. Let's do a test, I'll smoke a cigarette and one of you anti-smokers smoke a tailpipe, then you tell me which is more dangerous!

Everything, when abused, is deadly. Food, alcohol, water, cigarettes, cigars, pain killers, vitamins, etc.

Exactly, gloves, facemask - problem solved.

I question how much of this would have been dust to be honest, ive seen desktop pcs ive worked on where smokers smoke inside right next to it and yeah its not pretty but in most cases those machines are alot older than 2 years and with crappy crappy ventilation. Sounds like a wanky crock to me, should clean it out and take it to another tech centre. When the knobs at the 2nd centre repair it for you, be sure to send Dena a pack of cigarettes for being such a useless ****.

Good is all I can say. Seeing what tar does to the cpu heat sink in a desktop I can only imagine the havok it reeks inside a laptop. If you want to smoke go out side. Plus it keeps your house from stinking too. I hate going to people's houses and it smells so bad I can hardly breath.

oh good grief..quit whining. If you fix computers just post a sign telling people 'You refuse to fix or accept payments from smokers' and 'refuse to make house calls of smokers'.

While I agree that having a computer in a house full of smokers is very bad for it, I think Apple should have a special point in their agreement when you sign up for Applecare

The Plan does not cover:

[...]

b Damage due to accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair, or

maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider),

unauthorized modification, improper environment (including lack of proper

temperature or humidity), unusual physical or electrical stress or interference, failure or

fluctuation of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, or acts of God;

I am a smoker myself and even I don't like working on smokers' machines, it's disgusting. I clean my PC myself all the time, I never let it get that bad. You can tell if the dust in a machine is from smoke though, it smells much worse.

I have worked on machines that are really really bad but you can tell it's not from second hand smoke. I understand where people are coming from, working inside of a dirty machine that has come from second hand smoke is not nice.

If you pumped smoke from burning anything through a PC its improper use... just because its a cigarette people think its reasonable?

The difference is people do not have their face next to an exhaust while its running. And fast food unless eaten religiously will not kill you faster than cigarettes. I think the problem here is you are taking "normal cigarette activity" and comparing it will "abnormal fast food abuse" and "abnormal locations to breathe".

They never claimed coming into contact sporadically with cigarette waste will kill you as quickly as those who smoke, but pointed out it was a health risk.

Wouldn't a fair test be... normal life: You smoke 20 cigarettes a day and also be exposed to car exhaust fumes, and I'll walk around not smoking whilst being exposed to the same amount of car exhaust fumes.

Or read up on how your lungs work then think about what all that tar buildup in your lungs will inevitably lead to. The pictures of the insides of computers demonstrates the concept perfectly.
