Smoking voids Apple warranty?

Let's do a test, I'll smoke a cigarette and one of you anti-smokers smoke a tailpipe, then you tell me which is more dangerous!
I'll take you up on it. The parameters to keep equal: volume of smoke inhaled, temperature, filtered/unfiltered. You do realise you're probably going to lose because I have a catalytic converter on my side. :)
Next they'll be saying that the flakes of dead skin and microscopic mites the float around in a PC case void your guarantee. Send em all down an 18th century coal mine, let em see what hazardous working conditions really are, bunch of vaginas.

But both are those are naturally caused and (realistically) unpreventable, just part of everyday life. Cigarettes on the other hand don't have to be smoked into the computer.

Refusing to repair equipment due to the neglect of the owner is one thing, saying you won't even look at it because of nicotine stains is just whining like a little baby.

If a mobile phone gets soaked they will not even look at the fault, its presumed to be a moisture fault - no-one complains about this. But anyway by the sounds of it they did inspect it and have deemed the device failed because of tar from cigarette smoke.

She said that the computer is beyond economical repair due to tar from cigarette smoke! She said the hard drive is about to fail, the optical drive has failed and it isn't feasible to repair the computer under the warranty.

Uhm, aren't these the exact same? Obviously they would have had to look at the machine to know that it had smoking-related damage, and the article mentions severe buildup of tar, so what's the problem?

This is like saying someone with bad teeth comes into the dentist and the dentist refuses to do the work...

Sorry, but worst example ever.

Dentists are in the business of fixing teeth, and yes you pay them to do so.

Apple on the other hand is in the business of selling computers. They only fix them when they break. They fix them when the parts in their machines fail unexpectedly under the warranty period. By unexpected I mean, under normal operating conditions the part just fails. That doesn't mean "fried because it couldn't keep itself cool, from all the tar dust packed around the CPU cooler, because you decided to smoking 12 packs a day in your house."

I wasn't referring to Apple's actions. I was referring to ruining computers in general hence why I stated "ruining computers" at the end so people wouldn't think I was referring to Apple's actions.

How much does this guy smoke, and does he blow the smoke into the vents on the computer?

I live in a house with two smokers, and in the 10+ years I have lived with them not once has any of the computers we have had been covered in tar from cigarette smoke. Granted the longest we have had a computer without cleaning it has been maybe 6 months, with two smokers that would be roughly equivalent to a year with only one smoker, half the time mentioned in the OP....but wouldn't that still build up at least half the amount of tar/dust as the one in the OP?

Not sure how much this 21-year old smoker is smoking or where he blows his smoke, but if it got that bad in two years than its his fault, not Apple's......

No, they aren't air tight. They have at least one opening in order to equalize the pressure inside and outside. This is covered by a filter though, although it would be possible to clog that. Parts of the motor might also be exposed on the bottom of the drive. Coating it in something might also lead it to overheat (which might also be worsened indirectly by the rest of the system being too hot).

My mother had a baseline Dell (average ventilation) for 4 years, never opened and cleaned until I finally put in a graphics card, and there was a bit of gray dust covering the fans and openings, but that was it. What people are posting is NOT normal. The difference between a PC in a smoke-free home and a home of smokers is like night and day.

ummm, those pictures you people are pretty normal for just about ever damn computer outside of the pc enthusiast world, even the ones that dont come in contact with smoke. Also, if you cant honor the warranty, dont offer it. I find it funny that some of you people would even attempt to defend apple on this.

O wow, guess the computer i am working on that was in a house fire i should have a HAZMAT Suit on in a clean room with its own oxygen supply, but wait i'm a smoker so guess i'm dead already lol.

How many other manufacturers offer warranties that cover a machine covered in a thick layer of tar? I don't know why you believe this is a policy that is unique to Apple.

You're a great example of the hysteria that has been built up around cigarettes by anti-smoking groups. Listen to yourself, it sounds like you're describing Ebola. Smokers are exposed to far more nicotine for their entire lives, if it was as dangerous as the anti-smoking lobby insists it is wouldn't smokers be dropping dead after even a few days of exposure?

I don't smoke nor drive.

I walk 95% and if journey is more than 10 miles/ or have children with me and journey is more than 3 miles/ or it's suddenly become bad weather and the children

are with me we use the useless public transport run by Arriva.

If you want to smoke cigarettes or any tobacco product, do it in your own space.

The debate is about cigarettes leaving a stain in an Apple computer not motor vehicles.

Good on Apple. :yes: I've been asked to fix computers owned by smokers or used in smokey environments, and I flat out refuse. It's a complete mistreatment of the computer and certainly should void the warranty.

Acer had no problem fixing my as you would put it thick layer of tar covered laptop. Didn't hear anything about them not wanted to fix it because it smelled like smoke, had tar on it etc. Apple is just trying to get out without fixing the mac, which i see as discrimination towards all smokers.

If there can be a class action for banned xbox's there can be a class action for discrimination towards smokers, plus in all my years of smoking and repairing pc's laptops i have never had one come in that so covered that a little cleaning didn't fix, and i never seen it get into my drives or my hardware and coat it and i would have to say i am a heavy smoker so unless that kid was smoking 12 packs a day there is no way tar did all that damage.
