Overclock or upgrade?

Recommended Posts

I started a thread about replacing my AMD64 X2 5000 Black (2.6) with a AMD64 X2 6000 (3.0) as that is the highest CPU my ageing shuttle can take, but was advised to overclock what i have.

The question is where to start the overclock, i know what im doing with PC's and repair and so on all the time, but not ever tried overclocking for one reason or another, anyone wanna point me in the right place of where to start and what things to tweak first. Full Spec below

DO NOT GET the 6000. Ive seen people take your Black Edition to 3.5+ stable and it runs better. Ive always seen around all the forums(pcoverclockers, guru3d, here) to up the mhz 2-5 and see if its stable, then continue, then check and etc.

I know a friend who got the BE 5000 to 3.4 with stock heatsink/heatpipes/fan that amd gives you(not a bad stock cooler) and under load he was 61C. Thats not bad for a STOCK cooler.

I plan on getting a BE 940 P2 this week with a CM V8 cooler. Ill be overclocking that to 4ghz hopefully.

Also I forgot to mention I have the 6000 and while its lasted me 2 years and can go another year. It was a great CPU but overclocking this I could only get to 3.5 stable by myself or AI Overclock. By myself I got to 3.5 then upped volts a tenth like I was told. It was then stable. But thats as far as it went. With Black Edition CPUs they can go far.

Anyway, dont upgrade to the 6000 not worth it. But overclocking yours definitely.
