Ok, before we start, we need your currency, I can presume it's US considering a PS3 is nowhere near ?900. For $900 you can probably get a reasonably specced desktop or laptop which can run most modern games. Something for a laptop like the Studio 15 would be a good choice.

Still, a litle more information would be nice.

Personally I'd go with a console these days unless you're happy to pay to keep your PC up to date so you can play the latest games. You'll need a decent size HDTV to get the most out of the console but if you've already got one you're sorted. Don't rule out the 360 though - both the PS3 and 360 are great so have a good look at both and see which suits your needs best - there are lots of threads about this. Also, I'd recommend thinking about which console your friends have got so you can swap games and play online with them.

Its really hard to say, a few people have said the PC gaming scene is dying, although I don't agree. But alot of game developers seem to be concentrating on consoles then "porting" games to the PC.

For the past 8 years I was mainly a PC gamer, and 18 months ago I bought a PS3, and I am slowly moving to playing on the PS3 only and using my PC less. For the past 6 months I would say Ive "gamed" more on the PS3. I just us the PC for watching iPlayer and such and web browsing. But my PC is rather old and I don't have the cash to upgrade so the PS3 is better for me.

Its hard to say which one to get, each have their own advantages and disadvantages....

I'd got for a PS3 as the PC will be obsolete by the time you buy it :p

So true :p Depends on the games you like really. If you love FPSs, strategies and some RPGs go with the PC. If you like more RPGs, Fighters, etc.. then go PS3.

Depends what you prefer then really, if you want something specifically for playing games then PS3 is your best bet, but you'll get more general use out of the PC. What are the specs of your current PC to get a sort of idea.

It depends what games do you want to play. I have an XBOX 360 and a Gaming PC. PC absolutely runs the games better and at higher resolution. Plus you get to play FPS shooters they way they should be played with Keyboard and Mouse.

Also Consoles are getting their refresh in two years, so unless you really want to play some PS3 exclusive game, I would rather advise you to get a PC.

You can build a Nice gaming PC for $500. Check TomsHardware website and search for Building a Budget PC.

In long run PC sill be cheaper, since Hardware-wise will be superior to PS3 or Xbox 360 and also games are cheaper, so while spending $700 - $800 for 10 games on console, you will get the same games for $400 - $500 and even cheaper as they go on sale.

Cheers

You're buying $400's worth of accessories and games?

I now it can be done, but I think that's a bit overkill. Black Friday you'll be able to get a PS3 for $299 with some free games/movies.

Before this turns into the usual backwards and forwards fanfest, I'll ask you one question, do you care at all about media/tv shows/streaming content? You'll never be able to build a HTPC for $299 with the specs of a PS3, worth keeping in mind if you care about your media. 2 birds with one stone, gaming and home entertainment for $299.

Yes I am actually just looking for gaming.

Well not much help most of us can give you then other than point to metacritic/some review sites for you to poke around and find out what games you sound most interested in. Once you've made your mind up on that, people can help you build your PC, or find some deals if you go with a PS3.

Both offer lots of games, up to you to decide which games catch your eye most... or at least give people a starting point for recommending games, not just "I want to play games... PC or PS3". Sorry if I sound brash, I just dunno why people start "x or y" topics with hardly any information about their requirements/needs.

Lol! The PS3 is meant to have a 10 year lifecycle - they are still releasing games on the PS2 so I wouldn't worry about your PS3 becoming obsolete - you will be able to get games for a very long time. If you like FPS are you comfortable using a control pad or do you prefer mouse and keyboard? This could be the deciding factor, although I struggled using a pad at first but much prefer it now.

I would also think that it would be cheaper to sell the PS3 and buy the PS4 when that time comes, than to keep updating your PC every year or so.

Another reason I moved to the console, upgrading is a PITA, or wallet really. Every 2-3 years you need to upgrade, and even then I bought mid-priced range cards that didn't give full potential to the games.

Looking at the future you have to think, the PS3 has 7 more years left, but its likely you will want to upgrade before then. The PS4 at launch will be f**k off expensive as was the PS3, you wait a few year till the tech is refined before purchasing (aka the PS3 Slim) so given it took 3 years to come out with the PS3 slim, you can say that the PS3 has got, in reality, 4-5 years left.

So is it worth the $700 now, or $900 for a PC that will need upgrading probably in 3 years time?

As far as I'm concerned, it's REAL simple.

If you're JUST going to game, get the console.

If you want more than just gaming, get the PC.

With my PC, I surf the internet, create documents, etc. That being said, I prefer to game on my PC just because I feel like the

graphics are better and I can install player mods and the like. But it's also more expensive than any gaming console. I justify

that cost by all the other stuff I do with my PC.

I prefer using the controller enough though it is a lot harder

It won't be once you get used to it. Seems like a no brainer to me considering the amount you want to spend, and like I said before the PS3 is a one of payment whereas you're gonna have to keep paying to keep your PC updated to play the latest games. My brother spent around ?1500 on a gaming PC about 2 years ago and it could already do with spending a few hundred pounds on it in upgrades.

PC.

End of discussion.

In the long run, the PC will have a longer life than the PS3, with this generation coming to a close sometime within the next few years.. you can always upgrade your PC.
