Halo Reach Thread

ODST grew on me - I kinda liked the way the game flowed as you picked up the story by following in your colleagues foot-steps but I just wish it wasn't so bloody dark. The Rookie levels were just annoying.

Yeah I thought ODST was the best in the series in terms of how cohesive the story was, the frame story of the rookie held the flashback missions together well and then at the end when you're playing missions as the rookie the missions lead one right into the other. In most of the other games the missions are like a highlight real of the story, you're always jumping around from place to place without enough explanation of what happened in the meantime. It felt to me like Reach was the worst at this, until the very end you really didn't have any long term goal, the beginning is just a bunch of random missions jumbled together.

The problem with story in ODST was and in Reach is that nothing happens between first and last levels that advances the plot.

ODST first level : Dare takes you on a secret mission

bunch of crap that you do as some other characters and retrace it as rookie.

ODST last level : Dare tells you that you need to save the damn engineer and game is over.

Reach second level : Halsey tells you there is something important in the latch key.

you do bunch of crap in levels that don't add to main plot including a stupid cab driver pilot level.

Reach second to last level : Halsey tells you that you must save and take cortana to PoA

I still like the game in terms of the way bungie developed the Reach atmosphere, the feel of desperation. The gameplay, weapons, AAs, enemy AI - everything is rock solid and excellent!

Bungie just forgot to bring a good story to the Reach party.

I feel ODST was just a mini Reach with Halo3 mechanics.

Some mind boggling numbers are in:

31,000,000 Games have been played since launch

98,000,000 Player-games have been recorded

8,214,338 Daily Challenges have been completed

255,996 Weekly Challenges have been completed

78,499,560,895 Total Credits have been earned

953 Man-years have been spent in matchmade games

1365 Man-years have been spent in campaign

854,107 files have been uploaded

577,804 recommendations have been sent to friends

4,619,455 files have been downloaded

The atmosphere, as with the gameplay, was good up to the end of the space mission. Then after that it just reverts completely back to what Bungie is known for. For some people, I suppose they may like that... but the game had such a great start and ended with such cliched gameplay mechanics.

I am pretty sure that we will see Gears of War 3 introduce the campaign that will be truly emotional.

WTF? Gears of War probably has one of the worst stories in gaming history.

Sethos says it best

It's the frat boy "OMG MUSCLES AND BADDDDDASSNESS YAAAEH" aspect.

It's not that bad.

Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Crysis...all have similarly contrived stories.

And none of them were praised for their story.

I can't believe what I'm hearing, no wonder developers don't bother with good stories or story telling any more, people sucks up everything like a Shamwow

MAAAAAAAARIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Yeah, it is. I have high standards when it comes to story writing and Gears is anything but emotional.

Quick question about a certain part of the campaign, spoilers ahead!

What in the world happened to Jun? After Hasley tells Noble 6 to get Cortana to the PoA, Jun goes with Hasley and is never heard from again. Did he survive the fall of Reach? Is it possible that we could see some DLC content related to it?

What did you expect. Reach was going into total war and chaos, of course they're just going to throw enemies at you.

I have to disagree, I really enjoyed all of the SP mode and loved all the Halo 1 tie-ins.

It's an FPS game. It's not meant to be Jane Austen. They're meant to be big crash bang omg-he-chewed-his-own-face-off shootathons with good set-pieces. If you need "emotion" to shoot stuff in the face you probably should see a doctor.

The story is merely a MacGuffin - a reason to shoot stuff in the face. Who cares if the reason is the resurgence of an ancient race or because someone from the future stole your taco?

I can't think of any FPS which has a decent storyline except possibly Half-Life but even that rips off movies from the 50's and Orwell.

Here's one: Bioshock.

Ruined the moment they take it to the skies though :( and by pedestrian gameplay :(

Did anybody check out my map I posted a few pages ago? I'm just looking for any kind of feedback.

I will soon as I figure out why my usb stick doesn't work in my xbox :/

He probably did survive, if their bird didn't get shot down. I'm not too sure if Dr. Hasley survives the Reach invasion in the books, if she does, Jun probably did survive. If she doesn't, Jun is probably dead.

I've got that problem too. I went and bought an OCZ 4GB Diesel for mine and it just fails the data loss test... Even my really old and crappy 6GB WD Pocket Drive works!

From my experience it has something to do with read/write speeds. My Patriot XT and Sandisk Cruzer work great but my brand new toshiba mini 8gb and my pny attach? 4gb won't work either.

I think specs were posted about what a "compatible flash drive" should require for it to work with 360.

EDIT: Specs are half way down the page. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981975

Funny thing, looking over the specs I just realized my patriot is formatted ntfs and works but my pny and toshiba are formatted ntfs and don't work. When I'm home tonight I'm gonna format the toshiba and pny and see if fat32 does work.

    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 changelog: Added 'Reset to recommended' button for the Options. General fixes and improvements. WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
