Halo Reach Thread

I might join in (not sure though, haven't played at all in last few days) :/

Well like I said, I literally have not played the MP AT ALL yet, like not even a single second, and as I documented earlier in this thread I am not a big Halo player at all, so I am going to suck big time. So no worries if you have not played in a few days, as I can almost guarantee I will be the worse player by far.

One thing I can do though is drive, I do know that.

I just played a quick campaign level with him, but if I get time I may join you guys in multiplayer.

Cool. (Y)

I'm more of a firefight guy than a real competitive slayer guy. lol. But if you guys want to play slayer then that's fine as well..

What is the difference between the two?

I am open to whatever, but honestly we may be better served not playing in the really competitive type game modes, as I will get pwned. Then I will get discouraged and/or angry and then I will not want to play anymore. Just saying.

Firefight is like Horde from Gears 2. Competitive would be like normal Slayer, that includes CTF, Big Team Battle (BTB) and Invasion (which is technically a BTB, but with objectives) . All of those also have particular playlists as well .. say you can have Normal Slayer but with Snipers only or DMR's only.. There are a lot of combinations... and then you have a Headhunter (collecting skulls) , Juggernaut (One person is has triple overshields plus a power weapon.. that everyone else has to take down)... there's a bunch more I can't remember. I suck at explaining :p.

Ahh okay. Yeah TBH I would probably be more into the latter game types. as I have kind of done the whole horde mode thing to death thanks to gears and all of the other games that have implemented it like COD Nazi Zombies, etc. etc. So I would rather probably do something with a bit more of a goal, but again I am open to whatever everyone else is. I do know there was that one MP mode I wanted to check out, people were saying it was kind of like Assault Mode from Unreal Tournament 2K4, I am just at work and cannot be arsed to check back in this thread (especially since I am getting ready to go home), but it did sound interesting to me, as I tend to like objective based MP way more then just free for all everyone kill eachother.

Then Invasion would be your choice (Y).

well "sucking" is not the problem (I can do that all my life :p), just that I am not sure if I will have time to play.

no comment. but yeah.. it's been a while I"ve co-op'd with you since the days of ODST. (Y).. you better be on tonight! LOL.

That would indeed be it.

 Sorry that I misinterpreted. But cool, totally understand, this is basically my one night this week I have time, so totally know about not having time.

So eating dinner a bit later then usual with my wife, so that means I should be on right around 8 PM on the dot. So see whomever can play then. (Y)

Thanks to everyone that played, especially for putting up with how god awful I am at this game's MP. I do think tonight may have been my first and last experience with Halo Reach MP. I still have the SP to beat, then I move on to Dead Rising 2 which I may even do before I beat the SP, and then it is MOH on the PC, so I really think this may have been my last experience with the MP. I really tried to like it, and I did have fun being in an 7 person party, but overall it is just not my cup of tea.

I tried as well. I really did! But there's no way ol'skool Battlefield players like us would ever mesh with this type of MP. :D?

They just soak up way too much dmg, and every encounter felt just like the one before it. Felt very routine. Shoot, nade, melee... rinse, repeat. Playing with friends was the only thing keeping me going.

I much prefer multiplayer games that actually involve strategy (such as Gears of War 2, Team Fortress 2, etc), but Halo's multiplayer isn't that bad. There are some really good gametypes, the problem is people just want to stick with the crappy ones. I really hate 90% of the maps, too, and have with most Halo games. They don't really have anything that's not utterly wide open and has separate areas where you can have a battle with just one person (think 2fort, for instance).

It's a shame. There's a lot of great aspects of the multiplayer, but overall it's just so... bland. And I still think the vehicle implementation is the worst I've ever seen in a multiplayer FPS. It'd be different if there were some sort of balancing aspect to it, but there really isn't.

Man I think you need to give it one more chance.. SWAT Slayer was actually very fun ...it's the one you didn't get a chance to play lol.

You mean the same mode I have seen numerous people say in this thread how much they hate it?

And a huge thing to keep in mind is I just do not have much time to game anymore. Last night was the first time I have sat down and been able to play 2 hours straight for at least 3 weeks, if not longer. So because I do not have much time to play, I know pretty much right away what I like and do not like.

Maybe I will give it one more chance, but honestly odds are not looking that good. Part of me almost feels like I have to play it to get my money's worth now, and that is not a good sign, that I feel as if I have to play because I spent money. I should want to play.

If I had numerous hours to play, hell, even if I could actually play 1-2 hours a day, I would maybe give it a few more sessions, but chances are good the next time I will get another 2 hours like that to play is next Tuesday night. Other then that I will have 30 minutes here, and hour there, over the next few days. And considering how long it seems to take to even get into a lobby and find a match, my time is much better spent on a SP experience.

Exactly. (Y) You hit the nail right on the head. I am a BF player, and that is the type of MP I like. Not this shoot an entire clip at someone and they do not die. And it is fun playing with other people, no doubt about it, but it has to be more for me.

I'm in the same boat you are, no time to play, etc. I've gone on a couple of times but, as you probably noticed last night, I suck. So I generally get a lot of crap from the other players which doesn't help me wanting to go online to play. Playing with friends is much better, because at least the laughing at my horrible gameplay is good natured.

I'll go online again to play in a group like last night's.

And as you saw, I also suck, which is why I have everyone on mute except people in my party. So no doubt besides the time, sucking is not helping with my overall liking the game or not, but with that said I have no desire to get better. I know just as with every other game I could eventually get decent if I wanted to, I just do not care enough one way or the other.

With that said, I 110% agree it was definitely a lot of fun being in a group like last night. That would be the one and only reason I would ever play it again if I do.

I was wondering why it put both of us together in that two man team. I figured it would spread out the rankings putting a lower ranked player with a higher ranked one for balance. Also, I thought the needler was more powerful than it turned out to be.

+1 me into that pool laugh.gif I set my preference to "good natured" and our discussion on this reminds me of this

If you joined in a party, wouldn't you be on the same team?

I think you're misreading some of the comments. No one hates SWAT, it's just extremely annoying to be forced to play it over and over and over ad nauseum. I love the DMR and pistol, but I can only play a gametype with only those weapons for so long. I don't understand why Bungie did that -- why not throw the shotgun in there, the sniper, the assault rifle -- you know, stuff a SWAT team would actually probably have.

I definitely prefer stuff more like Battlefield, but Halo's multiplayer isn't horrible. Just overrated.

Anyone know why my avatar won't update on Bungie's website? The colors and equipment that I selected several days (and sessions) ago still haven't been translated to my profile page.

I think it's like that for everyone for some reason. Not sure why.

I think they disabled the feature for a little while to lower the stress on the servers. At least, that's what I've seen in the forums.

    • Well, it's good to know that they have found a workaround to a problem that they helped create, I guess...
    • Meta is reusing old DDR4 RAM in its servers instead of buying new hardware by Ivan Jenic Image: Meta The global hardware shortage isn’t exactly news, as the entire world has been struggling with rising component prices for quite some time now. And while big companies certainly aren’t as affected as the average consumer, even they aren’t opposed to the idea of saving a few (million) bucks. Meta appears to have found a way to spend less on new hardware while also putting its outdated infrastructure to use, essentially killing two birds with one stone. The company has built a custom chip that lets it reuse memory from retired servers rather than buying new hardware. The chip is called Vistara and allows for connecting old DDR4 RAM from obsolete servers into new servers that rely on DDR5. The problem Vistara solves goes back to a basic mismatch in how long hardware lasts. Meta replaces its servers every three to five years, but the memory modules inside them are good for seven to ten. When a server gets decommissioned, perfectly usable DDR4 RAM goes with it. Meta is presenting the new method at today’s ISCA symposium, but The Register has got hold of a paper that explains how Vistara works. It's a custom ASIC that bridges DDR4 memory to newer processors via aCXL 2.0/1.1 interface over PCIe Gen5 x16. Meta pulls DDR4 sticks from old machines and installs them in dedicated units it calls MemServers, each of which pairs 768GB of DDR5 with 256GB of recovered DDR4. The operating system sees the DDR4 as an additional memory node and draws from it when the primary DDR5 is running low. Off-the-shelf CXL hardware couldn't do this, so Meta built its own. Existing interfaces bundle their own memory with the controller, which makes reusing old RAM sticks impossible. But Vistara separates the controller from the memory entirely, so Meta can plug in whatever DDR4 sticks it has on hand. Meta plans to deploy the new architecture in hyperscale infrastructure with millions of servers, which should mean that Meta’s AI datacenters will now be more efficient. The company is investing heavily in AI infrastructure, especially with its new AI model, Muse Spark, now widely available. All of this doesn't mean that Meta will exclusively rely on "recycled" RAM, but the company is still looking at considerable savings at scale.

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
