I can play a little guitar. any one know any good sites that offer some FREE tutorials. I know lessons would be better but I cant really afford those

This is a pretty good site for free lessons of all kinds.

If you're willing to shell out a bit of cash, I highly, highly recommend this DVD course. It's by far the best lessons I've ever taken and the easiest to understand. If you've ever felt intimidated and confused by lessons in the past, this is the course for you and it's a great investment. Can't recommend it enough.

I play Bass, not guitar. I have an Ibanez GSR200. I just hook it up to my PA system through my DIGI002 mixer. It works well, and if I want I can run it through Pro-Tools to change the sound how I want.

Well, a bass is a type of guitar after all (bass guitar), so of course discussion of bass is welcome here as well :)

I play guitar. It started as a hobby, but I have to call myself a professional now, seeing as I derive the majority of income from that.

Gear:

  • Custom Built Guitar
    • Fender Strat Shaped Body
    • Mahoganny Body Wood
    • Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard
    • 22 Frets, Bone Nut, Sperzel Locking Tuners
    • Sustainiac Stealth Pro in the neck pickup position, Bill Lawrence L-280B in the middle position, PAF Pro in the bridge
    • Roland GK-2A Pickup installed at the bridge
    • Tremelo is Fender Jazzmaster Style

[*]Roland VG-99 with FC-300 Floorboard and 2 Boss FS-6 control pedals

    [*]Roland GR-33

[*]V-Wah (never use, just a backup)

[*]Crate GT212 120 watt Amp (loud and clean, perfect for the VG-99, want to replace with a keyboard amp at some point)

I trained as a jazz player, but professionally I mostly play pop/rock covers. Would like to do some more Jazz work, but there's not a lot of call for it where I live.

I haven't really played in about a good solid year. Broke up the band (work>music) but still pick up the guitar to strum along to a tune or two.

link if intersted. Thinking about putting all our stuff (we made an album Attack_of_the_Electroman_by_maclac.jpg) in a torrent but there is so much (not all good, lol) it'll take a while.

It kind of depends on the teacher. There are some guitar players that are really good, but poor teachers. I will say that I've taken lessons and I found these videos to be better and far easier to understand. The guy is really great at explaining things in a simple and easy to understand way. Why don't you grab the sample lessons from the site and see how you like it?

Nice rig there. Have you tried the Seymour Duncan Blackouts? I prefer them over EMG's. They're a little more "natural" sounding as well as being more defined and clearer. They have the push and cut through as actives, but the warmth of passives. I actually find my inexpensive Agile with the Duncans sounds better than my Gibson with the EMG's.

Nice rig!! How do you like the Roland? I've used a Boss GT-10 and a Line6 PODXT and found them just too complicated. How authentic is the actual guitar modeling? Was your Strat custom made for you, or did you build it yourself from parts?

My current guitar is an ESP WA-200, with 12-gauge strings, usually tuned to either drop C or drop A. My amp is a Line 6 Spider III 15-watt. I've been playing almost non-stop since May of this year. I play mostly metalcore and deathcore, yay.

I'm looking to get a Schecter Damien 7 with EMG's, so that I can use ultra low tunings (like drop G).

I'd have to advise against the Damien. My buddy has a 6 string version and I don't find it to be all that great. I'd say go for the Hellraiser instead. I think it's pretty close to the same price, and it's a way, way nicer guitar. You also might want to look at Agile. They're not very well known: they're only sold over the net and rely on word of mouth advertising only, but they're really nice guitars and they're made in Korea as well (same as Schecter). They're actually quite popular on forums such as 7string.org, ect.. Great customer service too. If the guitar has any problems, or if you just don't like it, you can return it for a full refund.

I looked at that company's guitars, and I'm not liking them too much. I also looked at the Hellraiser, and it's rather ugly in my opinion, as abalone borders and gloss finishes are ugly. That's why I like the Damien- flat black finish, and nothing fancy. Pickups are a nonissue anyway, as I'll eventually just replace the EMG HZ pickups with either an EMG 707 or an EMG 81-7.

Cool. Yeah, if you like it, it's your guitar so it's your choice. I just personally didn't like the way it plays. Just FYI they do make a black Hellraiser without the abalone borders, but it does have a gloss finish:

Actually, I was looking pretty hard at that schecter when I bought my ibanez. I'm still debating on buying it. How do you like it?

It's a great bass, good solid construction. I love the neck on it, it's very thin so it won't be too much of a change from your Ibanez. The only thing i don't like about it is the lack of countouring on the top of the bass. It's fine if i play finger style, but if i'm playing with a pick then i can get some marks on my forearm where my arm keeps hitting the edge of the bass.

Try it out, you can probably get them at a very good price.

    • Friday Windows 11 preview builds are here. Insiders in the Experimental (formerly Dev) and Beta Channel can download builds 26300.8697 and 26220.8690. My Windows11 device on the Preview Channel just got 26220.8728. My guess is this build is a nightly update from 26220.8690.
    • Traffic has a surprisingly unexpected impact on your surroundings by Sayan Sen Image by Radik 2707 via Pexels A collaborative study by researchers from several Israeli institutions found that everyday pollution from traffic and industrial activity measurably changed the atmospheric electric field over the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, providing new evidence of how human activity can influence the lower atmosphere. The research was led by Dr. Roy Yaniv of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Gertner Institute at Sheba Medical Center, Dr. Assaf Hochman of the Fredy & Nadine Herrmann Institute of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University, and Prof. Yoav Yair of Reichman University. The study also involved Itay Froomer, a student from Hadera High School and the Israeli Museum of Medicine and Science (Technoda), who carried out the work as part of the Ministry of Education's 5-unit physics research track. The researchers focused on the atmospheric electric field under fair-weather conditions. Even in the absence of storms, a weak electric field naturally exists between Earth's surface and the atmosphere. One of the main ways scientists measure this field is through the Potential Gradient (PG), which is the inverse of the vertical component of the electric field. PG is a key part of the global electric circuit, a planet-wide system of electrical currents maintained by thunderstorms and electrified clouds around the world. Scientists have long known that the atmospheric electric field can be influenced by factors ranging from large-scale atmospheric processes to local weather conditions such as dust, fog and clouds. Human-made pollution is also known to play a role, but understanding exactly how urban emissions affect the electric field close to the ground has remained an area of ongoing research. To investigate this relationship, the team analyzed measurements from a newly installed electric field mill, an instrument used to continuously monitor the strength of the atmospheric electric field. The instrument was installed at the Center for Technological Education (Roter House) in Holon and became operational in August 2024. It was funded by Israel's Ministry of Education and the Holon municipality. The electric field mill forms part of a broader monitoring network that includes nearby meteorological stations and air-quality monitoring sites. This allowed researchers to compare electric field measurements with detailed weather data and pollution records to better understand what was driving changes in the Potential Gradient. The study focused on two major urban pollutants: fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), both commonly produced by vehicle traffic and industrial activity. PM2.5 refers to microscopic airborne particles small enough to remain suspended in the atmosphere for extended periods, while NOx is a group of gases released during fuel combustion. Researchers examined daily, weekly and seasonal patterns in the atmospheric electric field and compared them with changes in pollutant concentrations. Their analysis revealed a clear relationship between NOx levels and changes in the Potential Gradient, particularly during morning and evening rush hours when traffic emissions were at their highest. “What we observe is a direct physical link between emission peaks and electrical variability,” explained Dr. Roy Yaniv. “NOx reduces atmospheric conductivity very quickly, so the electric field responds almost instantaneously during traffic rush hours.” Atmospheric conductivity describes how easily electrical charges move through the air. According to the researchers, nitrogen oxides rapidly alter this conductivity, causing a near-immediate response in the electric field. PM2.5, however, was associated with a delayed response. The researchers attributed this difference to the particles' longer atmospheric residence time, meaning they remain in the atmosphere for longer periods, as well as their different microphysical interactions with surrounding air and atmospheric components. The study also identified a pronounced "weekend effect." In Israel, traffic volumes and some industrial activity decline significantly on Fridays and Saturdays. During these periods, concentrations of both NOx and PM2.5 dropped, and corresponding changes were observed in the atmospheric electric field. “The weekend signal demonstrates just how sensitive the electric field is to changes in human activity,” the researchers noted. “When emissions decline, the electrical environment adjusts at once, providing a high-resolution indicator of urban atmospheric conditions.” The findings showed that pollution levels can influence not only the chemical composition of the atmosphere but also its electrical properties. Researchers said the results strengthened the case for using atmospheric electricity as an additional tool for environmental monitoring, particularly in densely populated urban areas where anthropogenic, or human-caused, influences are most pronounced. The study also pointed to potential public health applications. By combining air-quality measurements with observations of atmospheric electricity, researchers said they could gain a more complete picture of how urban atmospheric conditions change over time. “Integrating air-quality data with electric-field measurements gives us a clearer picture of how the lower atmosphere evolves moment by moment,” the researchers added. “It’s a framework that can support both scientific insight and practical environmental decision-making.” Beyond the scientific findings, the project highlighted a collaboration between universities, public institutions and secondary education. Researchers said the work demonstrated how students could take part in real-world environmental research while contributing to studies of air quality, atmospheric processes and their potential effects on society.
