Not sure whether to make a separate thread or not, but this is guitar land.

Thinking of getting an electric to go with my acoustics. First things first I'm no Jimi.

So it doesn't have to have every feature, price limit will most likely be around ?200.

I have an Ibanez acoustic which I like, so figured it was safe to look at them.

Any suggestions? I don't like the Axe style, V style, etc.

1 Quite like the look of this;

I don't know the difference between the types of pickups or what guitars will make which feel of sound. Advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Bands I'm most recently playing to give you an idea would be Radiohead (always), Mumford & Sons, Pearl Jam.

Cheers guys.

I would go for the epi les paul. Such a versatile guitar and well built aswell

Well, tell us what sort of sound you're going for and I/we'll make some suggestions :)

I don't really know, I mentioned the bands I'm playing to give an idea. Don't know what different sounds electrics punch out.

I think some music should be posted so we can take a listen to what gets produced with all this expensive gear.

I did try guitar (and bass) quite a few years ago, but my fingers have a life of their own and I didn't get very far. Maybe i'll try again sometime.

Your amp costs ?1500 and? I don't get you. Ideally i'd be spending less than ?50 if I can find a second hand one. I'm familiar with quality products being expensive. :)

The roland cube seems like an extortionate price for a 2W battery powered 6inch amp?

I could get one of these for ?15 cheaper. Wouldn't that make more sense?

As I say, I'm new to anything electric and appreciate your help Rich if you can.

Any other guitar players here? I've been playing 15 years. I play mostly metal, but a bit of everything else as well.?

Feel free to post your gear with any mods, ect... It's always fun to talk gear. My list:

Guitars:

Agile PS-900: Seymour Duncan Blackouts, Tone Pros Locking Tune-O-Matic, Grover Locking Tuners

Gibson Explorer: EMG 81/89,?Tone Pros Locking Tune-O-Matic, Grover Locking Tuners

Ibanez V300CW

Amps:

(Fender) EVH 5150III w/Mesa 4x12 cab

Peavey Bandit 112

Other Gear:

ISP Decimator

MXR 10 Band EQ

Any chances of videos of you playing?

I thought starting off acoustic was a good idea, too, but now I regret it. I originally bought myself a Fender acoustic for around ?100, and after learning a couple of chords and some basic music reading skills, I got bored of it. Around a year later, I finally saved up to buy myself an electric, and I haven't been able to put it down since then- I'm always playing it. It mostly depends on what you're looking to play, I guess? if you want to play rock/metal, then you're better off with an electric from the start. If you're looking to play classic rock, blues, or to pick up chicks, then you'd best get an acoustic.

I started on acoustic and it is the best advice I can give anyone, personally. I've been playing for about 12 years, I used to be into playing metal and all that, but now I barely touch my electric, and stick to strictly acoustic. I find it much more satisfying, and more difficult, considering my play style. I'm big into finger picking, ten finger tapping, percussion smacks, and playing with both hands (no strumming).

Electric: ESP LTD Deluxe EC-1000, Silver Sunburst color, with Active EMG-HZ pickups.

Acoustic: Black Rogue, dreadnought.

I actually own two guitars, started playing earlier this year.

I currently own two electric guitars

  • Squire Strat (the one from the beginners kit)
  • Epiphone Les Paul Studio Custom

My amp is the amp from the kit but I plan on getting a Line 6 Spider IV 75 :)

I also plan on picking up either a Schecter C-1 or a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 this holiday season.

I'm still trying to discover my style though.

Guys I need advice:

I'm thinking of getting a guitar just for hobby. Not planning to invest too much since I'm not sure I'll be serious about it, just want to start and see how it goes.

1. What hobby guitar to pick?

2. Do I need an amplifier or I can just plug it into my computer? (I'll be listening mostly on headphones since the neighbors are a bit picky)

I've played guitar for five years now, when I first started I played an ibanez electric guitar (I can't remember which model).

A few years ago, I changed to playing acoustic guitar and I now have a Cruiser Crafter guitar; it's a beautiful instrument to play!

  • 1 year later...

I've played guitar since I was about 13 but switched over to bass after about 5-6 years. Then took a 12-15 year break, just got back into it about a year ago.

My current gear is a Jackson JS3 Kelly Bird IV (Transparent Blue Burst), Fender Rumble 150, D'Addario EXL165 strings, Gaines Audio Balanced Line Interface box. Using Ableton Live 9 for recording and some AKG K99's for monitoring (and keeping the wife from bitching) Looking to get a DigiTech BP90 multi-effects pedal soon.

Well, I refuse to let this topic die (although I had hoped for somebody else to post). I know there are other players here.

NBD (New Bass Day) a few weeks ago. Snagged a used (but like new) Squier Vintage Modified PJ bass for cheap and dropped a PJ set of EMG Geezer Butlers in it. Wow what a difference.

Family photo:

L-R is my Aria Pro II TSB-400, the Squier (mentioned above) and my precious... a Jackson JS3 Kelly Bird and the Fender Rumble. 150 watts of chest pounding 15" low end goodness. I'd like a GK head in the 2-500W range and a 4x10 cab, but the wife (and neighbors) thinks that the Rumble 150 is enough, I disagree, but ya gotta comprise in life.

    • Google Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving for OpenAI by Pradeep Viswanathan Noam Shazeer is best known as one of the co-authors of the 2017 “Attention Is All You Need” paper, which introduced the Transformer architecture that now powers most large language models. He also worked on several major Google AI projects, including LaMDA, before leaving the company in 2021 to co-found Character.AI. He also authored the Sparsely-gated Mixture of Experts (2016) paper, which is popular among the AI community. After falling behind OpenAI and Anthropic a couple of years ago, Google brought Shazeer back in 2024 as part of a major deal with Character.AI. Through this deal, along with Noam, several other researchers returned to Google DeepMind. More recently, he was a vice president of engineering at Google and a technical co-lead for Gemini. Today, Noam Shazeer announced on X that he is leaving Google and joining OpenAI. In his post, Shazeer said it was a difficult decision to move on, adding that he was proud of the Google team and what it had built together. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the move with a post of his own, saying Shazeer was one of the people he had most wanted to work with since OpenAI’s early days. Google has made strong progress with Gemini over the past year, closing the gap with OpenAI in several areas. But losing Noam Shazeer is a major talent setback for them, especially after bringing him back less than two years ago by spending a fortune. For OpenAI, the hire adds one of the industry’s most experienced language model researchers to a team that is already pushing ahead with ChatGPT, Codex, and its next generation of frontier models.
