Time for a little story:

I work for the UK's leading DJ and music retailer, we sell vinyl, CDs, DJ equipment and music production hardware. Part of that is musical instruments, namely electric guitars...

A chavvy (rough, low education, high self opinion) bloke came into the store and wanted to buy an electric guitar. The sales guy asked what sort, etc - and the guy seemed to assume there was only 1 sort - thus allowing the sales guy to direct him to starter packs... These comprise of a guitar, lead, plectrums, case and amp. The guy was adamant he didn't want an amp and got angry about "being sold things he didn't need". Fair play, don't buy an amp.

Bloke comes back a week or so later and starts mouthing off at the sales desk about suing us and so on. Customer Service manager comes down to see what the issue is. Bloke shows him his hand, all burned in the palm... WTF?

So there talk, and the guy is mad because we sold him dangerous gear that was faulty... How so? Well he got home, got his guitar out, plugged the jack in... Oh no, the other end doesn't fit the wall. Those buggers didn't even tell me I needed an adaptor... So he cuts the cable and wires it to a 13 amp plug...

In store, he pulls the "modified" cable from his bag, and the cust serv dude is trying not to laugh. The bloke is getting more and more aggressive, and won't accept that this is his fault for being stupid. He is told that you don't just plug it into the wall, that's ridiculous, you plug into an amp, and that draws power from the mains. "No - that's what happens on stage, for home use surely you just power the guitar".

The guy just won't accept that he's wrong, until he's shown how it works in the demo room. Eventually he calms down, buys a new cable and an amp.

But wow - what a dick!

Holy hell what an idiot. I'm gathering it was a passive guitar or it would have blown the amp and it'd be toast, but probably wouldn't have harmed him.

Grr. Not impressed. I just bought a new set of D'addario XL Chromes warm flat wound bass strings to replace my elixir round wounds and as I was adjusting the intonation to compensate for the different gauge of the E string, it snapped at the nut. I'm not amused.

I have an Ibanez that has been sat for 2 years whilst I've been travelling. Are the strings going to be f00ked when I come back to it? I'm pretty crap at the moment and they sound bad to me but it could well be my dreadful playing. I have ordered a new set, just curious if no playing the strings still deteriorate? I've tuned it.

It just sucks that is snapped there as it's then no longer long enough to restring :(

They will probably be full of dust... I recommend you change them before playing.

I am looking at learning how to play a guitar(Acoustic), I just want to know what is a good 'started' guitar to get and also some direction in how to get started? really just want to learn at my own pace. Please note that I have never really played before and have little or no musical talent lol, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated though!, Thanks in advance!

Go to a store and try the guitars for yourself until you find one that you find to be comfortable. Remember a guitar you find to be the most comfortable option as you start out may not be the most comfortable guitar as you progress. I bought a SG Gibson Faded as my first guitar, and then I sold it (even for a small profit) and moved on to a Fender Stratocaster American.

More expensive guitars tend to hold their value better and what is the point of buying many cheap guitars to finally end up with a more expensive guitar? In the long run buying a lot of cheap guitars will become the more expensive route.

You have to be dedicated though as the first steps are the most difficult ones. When you learn some basics, it starts being more enjoyable as you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I'm very excited about this Christmas :D

I've got a G-Major 2 on the way, with a G-Minor foot controller (and a Rocktron HEX Volume/Expression pedal). Not only that but I've ordered a couple of cable parts to allow the G-Major 2 to switch the channels on my JSX as well! :D

Now I'm thinking about getting a Jim Dunlop KH95, or Morley Mark Tremonti wah either to replace or sit alongside my current Dunlop 535Q Crybaby :)

So you know how my new string snapped? Well, it either took out my P pickup, or screwed with the active preamp, because it will randomly get staticky and then shut off completely for a couple minutes at a time. It only does this when using the P pickup though, if I'm just using the J I can not get it to do this.

I have decided to switch it over to a nice passive system. I'll be replacing my pots with CTS 250k. I will also be installing Lace Senor Almuma-P and Aluma-J pickups. I want to do a 4 way pickup selector switch (rotary) for bridge/both series/both parallel/neck but I can't seem to find any wiring diagrams that allow for one while maintaining individual pickup volume pots. Can anybody help me out with this one?

I want 4 knobs:

1: 4 way rotary switch

2: volume neck

3: volume bridge

4: tone
