[Steam] Holiday Sale

Recommended Posts

I guess I see that if someone missed a sale, this is a good chance to pick up the "best of." However I'm a little personally annoyed about Left 4 Dead 2, it's "on sale" today for the same price it has been the entire holiday sale. I'd been waiting hoping to get a little more of a discount, but I'll grab it today. I also would have loved to see some small token discount ($5 even?) on MW2. Thing of it is, I've gotten so many other games over the past two weeks, that I might not need to get MW2 at all now! :)

It was a good run though. im sure lots of you guys picked up more games than you'll get around to playing.

Yep, you're right there. I picked up Star Wars KOTOR, and the id Super Pack (which has 22 titles in total), and I probably won't get around to play all of them, but it's because my graphics card isn't in my PC. :p I just need to get a modern power supply and then I can use it again.

My only regret is not buying C & C 3 or the Civilization series.

In the end I bought:

Prey

Left 4 Dead 1

Crysis Pack

Mass Effect

Horror games dont appeal to me so I'm not buying Killing Floor or STALKER.

I still want to buy a modern game but L4D's Co-Op gameplay doesnt appeal to me and I'm not paying $60 for MW 2. :p

I was hoping to see Modern Warfare 1 get 50% off today to go along with my World at War bargain, but oh well. I went ahead and picked up Ghostbusters today, and Counter-Strike: Source before the deals changed.

I was thinking of picking up a couple other games, but I've spent enough money. :p

Final List was:

Defense Grid

Star Wars: Jedi Knight pack (Dark Forces, Dark Forces II, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy)

Empire: Total War

Rome: Total War Gold

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

Deus Ex: GOTY Edition

Braid

Audiosurf

Battlefield 2 Collection

World in Conflict / World in Conflict: Soviet Assault

Dead Space

Jade Empire

Call of Duty: World at War

Max Payne

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne

Half-Life: Source

Doom Collection (Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Master Levels, Doom 3, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil)

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY

Counter-Strike: Source

Ghostbusters

:D

My only regret is not buying C & C 3 or the Civilization series.

I was tempted by the Civilization IV pack, but didn't go for it in the end, as I'm not really a big fan of the PC ones. The console version (Civilization Revolution) is my favourite.

    • Google reshuffles its AI coding team as it struggles to catch Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is already reorganizing the AI coding “strike team” it created roughly two months ago, as it attempts to find ways to close the gap with Anthropic in one of generative AI’s most commercially important areas. According to The Information, Google DeepMind is expanding the team’s focus to include “midtraining,” rather than concentrating only on coding tools and agents. Midtraining takes place after a model’s broad initial training but before the final stages that prepare it to follow instructions and perform specific tasks. In simple terms, it gives developers another opportunity to expose a model to carefully selected data before it is polished for release. That could help Google improve Gemini’s underlying coding abilities instead of relying only on better prompts, interfaces, or post-training. Previous research has found that midtraining can be particularly effective for code and mathematics, where models must move from general language knowledge to more structured tasks. Google reportedly created the original strike team in April. It was led by Google DeepMind research engineer Sebastian Borgeaud, who previously worked on model pretraining, and focused on complex, long-running programming jobs. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Google DeepMind chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu were also reportedly involved in the effort. DeepMind researchers were said to believe that Anthropic’s coding tools were outperforming Google’s Gemini models, prompting the company to give the project more attention. Anthropic has made coding a central part of its AI strategy through Claude Code and its Claude model family. The company has continued improving that area, with Claude Opus 4.8 offering upgrades for coding and other agentic tasks, along with the now-unavailable Mythos and Fable models. The reshuffle also comes at a time when Google faces increased competition for AI researchers. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer recently announced that he was leaving Google for OpenAI, while two other researchers who contributed to Gemini and DeepMind projects are reportedly preparing to join Anthropic. It remains unclear whether the reorganized team will produce a new public Gemini model or developer product. No release date, team size, or specific performance target has been disclosed.
