[Steam] Holiday Sale

Just out of interest - I'm running an Acer Aspire Revo atm, and wouldn't mind playing a bit of Grand Theft Auto IV, however I'm not sure if it'll work, or more to the point, work at a decent kinda pace, on my machine. Here's the specs:

Intel Atom Processor (203) @ 1.6GHz

2GB RAM

ION GPU.

Edit -> Ooh, and possibly BioShock - I've read good things about that, so I wouldn't mind checking it out.

Not sure if it'll run very well at all. GTA IV isn't very nice to PC hardware from what I've read.

GTA IV wouldn't run on those specs. I bought GTA IV on the first sale day but my machine can barely play it, but I'm waiting to play it until I upgrade. For ?5, you may as well buy it, and wait to install it until you upgrade or build a new machine, even if that takes a while.

Cheers for the heads-up - Truth be told, the Acer was brought to be used as a Media Centre, but I've actually started to use it as a replacement main machine, because it does pretty much everything I use a PC for. I am, however, probably gonna buy a "less lightweight" machine later on in the year, so buying GTA IV and holding on to it until later on does sound like a good idea.

Yeah as lcg said, you can't really go wrong with buying it right now as it's not going to get much cheaper. If you're looking for a fun game in the sale (or has it finished?) you might want to look at World of Goo. Should run great on your laptop :)

Cheers for the heads-up - World of Goo sounds familiar - and there's a free Demo version over on Steam, so I think I'll download the demo, check it out, and if I like it, I'll buy the full version. Basically I just need something to play, other than Football Manager 2010 :)

The demo should be pretty small too, the full download if only 70MB :p It's now back up to full price of ?4.24. Breaking the bank, I know.

I have a C2D E8400@3Ghz plus a 9800GTX+ and 4GB system ram and the game runs like a dog on it, even at 1280x800 medium settings :( So I don't think it will run very well on that rig unfortunately :(

While I agree that it won't run on his system, it shouldn't run like a dog on yours. I have a C2D E7300 (2.66GHz) and a 9800 GT and BioShock runs like it was Quake classic. :)

I ran Bioshock on a Athlon 3000+, Radeon 2600XT 1.5GB RAM without a hitch at medium settings about a year ago.

GTA4 is extremely cpu intensive. You need a quad core really for decent fps. No way in hell it would run on an atom.

Not a chance  But high five for being a Revo owner :D

Soz I was talking about GTA IV, as that was what he was asking about, the Bioshock seems to have been added later thus confusing the issue :p

Yes Bioshock runs at max everything here just perfectly, cant remember the res, may have been 1920x1200 or something

Yeah I don't think gta4 would even run on a 3000+

It does support it, but it's behaviour is entirely random. I've played games whilst downloading data, and sometimes it stops.

Though you can always ALT+TAB out of a game while it's running, and then pause/resume your downloads.

I was a big sucker for the Steam sales, here is everything I picked up over the holidays:

Dragon Age

L4D2

C&C3 + Kane's Wrath

S.T.A.L.K.E.R SoC

Killing Floor

Prey

The Witcher

All and all WAY more bang for the buck than what I used to spend on console games, I think I am going to hold out on Mass Effect 2 until it is on sale on Steam, I have plenty to keep me busy until then.

Any chance that they will have another sale on January 6th (Three Wise Men)?

I'm a bit frustrated since I didn't buy Torchlight and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. yesterday when I first posted about them! I thought I could buy the games today since the sale was scheduled to end at 9:00 AM PST, but I had to go out early in the morning to take care of some things, and I just got back home. :(

In total I ended up spending $127 which isn't that much if you think about it. That's like two full price retail games.

I ended up picking up:

Osmos

Grand Theft Auto IV

Mirror's Edge

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

Darwinia

Audiosurf

Bioshock

Mass Effect

Braid

Burnout Paradise

Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

Crysis

Crysis Warhead

Crysis Wars

Dead Space

DiRT 2 (Free with Radeon 5850)

Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood

FUEL

Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights

Multiwinia

Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within

Prince of Persia: Two Thrones

Starwars: Knights of The Old Republic
