Flash drive problem

Recommended Posts

I'm fighting with a PC at the office here trying to get it to read from a flash drive. What happens is this:

The flash drive lights up when inserted so there's clearly power going to it from the port. The drive mounts and appears in My Computer and can be opened, but when opened it appears as empty (We've verified that there are files on it on another PC). If I try to move a file to it, I get an error saying "System cannot find the file specified." Another curiosity is that the light on the drive does not go out, while it does on every other PC once the system is done mounting the drive and indexing the contents.

There is a USB printer attached to the PC that does work, so it seems to me that it's not a port/hardware problem. The drive has been tried on multiple ports, both case-lead ports and onboard ones, and the results are the same all around.

Help?

What year was the PC (Motherboard) manufactured ?

(2003 and older were not good years for USB2 as the manufacturers were not getting it right, with no help from MS who would not let them supply their own drivers)

Is it XP ?

What Service Pack ?

Have you tried another thumb drive (that can handle USB 1.1) ?

Hello,

Are you logged into the workstation with proper rights to fully access the USB flash drive?

Is there any security software installed or group policy settings which could be preventing access to the USB flash drive?
