Okay, so I netflixed it, but, hey, it's my first Bluray. (Reminder: I just got a PS3 for Christmas.. so yeah.)

I figured what a better thing to watch than that of Planet Earth with David Attenburough (instead of Sigorney Weaver!) for a first Bluray.

Anyone think I made a good decision? :)

I have been putting off Bluray. But I got a PS3 last year. I think you've done well with Planet Earth there. I think that would be a good first Bluray, and Blue Planet as well.

The only thing stopping me at the moment is the size of my telly! Actually that is a lie of sorts. As I've never tried a Bluray disc on it (only DVDs), I can't know if Bluray will make a noticeable difference. Still, I have it in my head that I'll switch to Bluray when I get a screen larger than 30".

As long as your tv is capable of 1080p or even 720p you'll notice the difference. I cant watch DVDs anymore, they just look horrid.

That makes me really happy to hear, my Acer monitor that I'm using for my PS3 goes upto 1080p .

Sorry to say this mate, but even on a 26" screen, the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is like the difference between night and day. Saying your screen is too small is no valid excuse :)

Definitely upgrade to bluray, make sure its a PS3 or another player that's capable of 3D bluray (unless you don't think you'll need/want that).

Wow, okay! Well, truth be told, I have only a 24" Samsung HD screen. My PS3 looks awesome on it. DVDs do too. OK, I'll switch to Bluray, but I want my first one to be Avatar!

My first bluray was Casino Royal, got it for free as I was one of the first x amount of people to sign up to the PSN when the PS3 first got released. (Well technically I did it through my brothers console, but still got myself the bluray :p)

Great choice, I got that on HD-DVD (!) and it's absolute gem! you did well (I don't see the point of buying it again on Blu-Ray when I already have a HD version of it)

Being that it's a blu-ray, shouldn't it be "Trophy Unlocked"?

True, but "Achievement Unlocked" has a better ring to it don't you think?

A little over the top isn't it? I mean if you still own a SDTV (like myself) then DVDs looks perfectly fine and even on a HDTV, Blu-Ray players like the PS3 do a pretty decent job at upscaling DVDs to HD resolutions. Granted they don't have the detail of proper HD movies but they are hardly horrid and quite watchable :)

That's definitely a great first pick - I brought two copies of Planet Earth just before Christmas - one copy for a relative, as a Christmas Present, and one to keep :) I got 5 Blu-Rays free with my first Blu-Ray player, so I guess those don't count, which means the first Blu-Ray I brought was The Mist.

You must watch Baraka. It's THE best looking bluray out there, it's magnificient.

A 70mm film shot entirely without dialogue, just sound and images, on six continents and in 24 countries, exploring the formation and evolution of Earth, the ascendance of man and the consequences of technology.
Baraka offers a breathtaking 1080p high definition, 2.20:1-framed transfer. Filmed in 65mm and painstakingly and lovingly restored with an 8k UltraDigital HD Process, the film represents the current zenith of Blu-ray picture quality. The depth, clarity, and color reproduction of the film is incredible. Each scene provides awe-inspiring, reference-quality imagery that effortlessly places the viewer within each frame of the film regardless of its locale on the world's surface.

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
