5 Reasons you still need to be a PC gamer

Recommended Posts

5 doesn't contradict number 1. You don't necessarily need a high cost system to play bleeding edge games.

3 can't be done on a console - since when could you play Space Quest on a 360? Heck, can you play Halo 1 on a 360 after April?

2 - debatable. I hear a lot of people say "Wish I had a KB/Mouse on a console". Personal preference really.

So yeah, I agree. PC Gaming's not going away. And after seeing pricing of PC games vs Console games - i'm happy to be a PC gamer.

cheaper games - not necessarily true

better controls - even the pic shows a ton of super expensive hardware which 99% of pc gamers dont have

play the classics - i'd be damned if im stuck with the classics....

online worlds - opposite of 'cheaper games' i guess, with monthly subscriptions and all that

bleeding edge - again what 99% of pc gamers arent rich enough to do

and yes, im a pc gamer... the reason consoles exist at all, and have done so well, is because they fit into a general lifestyle alot better... pc gaming needs an investment, at the very least in terms of tme spent setting up your computer etc... consoles just need you to turn it on and insert the disc...

cheaper games != modern warfare 2

add in the now becoming standard DLC and things in games they're no cheaper whatever the platform. It's all about making most expensive garbage games and making most money off them pretty much now for studios and publishers.

While controls are better for shooters... better reactions and movement control it... it doesn't necessarily mean they're best over all. Easiest example i can think of is MGS2 on PC and PS2 the PS2 was a lot easier to control and manage.

Online worlds ? playstation has home pc has hundreds like second life, vside etc.

Bleeding edge is pretty much a waste of time. nobody is going to drop $3,000 every 4-6 months on new hardware unless they are stupid.

I'm a majority PC player but have ps3 and I think they each have their place separate from each other most the time. It's down to developers and publishers if they choose to make garbage and messy games that are a sad mash up of the platforms prompting ideas like this thread.

Forgot one:

Be able to fix a game because the developers are crap. I'm looking at you Obsidian and to a lesser extent Bioware...

Oblivion and Fallout are an absolute mess without mods. Dragon's Age is okay, but Bioware missed out on a lot of stuff that mods improve upon and even fix.

Eh, you don't need to drop ?1.5k every 6 months to play games at a decent resolution. I've just upgraded to a quad core after 2 years of having this PC and I've ran everything on max since then. PC games are still cheaper though. I'm paying half price for BF: BC2 compared to any console owners.

When will people realize MODERN WARFARE 2 ISNT A TRUE PC GAME. Jesus, pc gamer or not, you have to be a FOOL to consider that game a PC game and a worthwhile game. It was a game where it showed true PC gamers and fools. The fools were the people that paid $60 to jump onto the BETA bandwagon. Thats all it is. Hell the game went down recently. NO PC GAME GOES DOWN. Down meaning you cant play it anymore, what kind of bull**** is that? IWNet is bogus and will always be bogus. Im sorry for ranting but I cant STAND it when people say MW2 is a PC game. F that. Its a direct Console port. You know why? No console, no dedicated servers, no mods. Its missing essential things like those plus more like other TRUE PC games have.

When you make a game that is LIABLE to go DOWN, then you did not make a PC game. Its bs thats it. Also 3k every 6 months. Even if your just putting out a rough estimate thats WAY to high and you must be playing at ALL HIGH settings at 1920*1080 on a 32" Monitor/TV.

I say that because I know DAMN SURE someone who builds a New PC every year and all high end and spends 2k every year. He does it because he's on a 42" MONITOR and he needs all high. The average dedicated hardcore PC gamer will be on a decent sized monitor and doesnt always need everything on high.

For example AA/AF? Useless on max settings. Honestly I dont notice a difference besides it robbing your performance. Im a hardcore PC gamer who plays @ High, but even my resolution isnt max because I believe its way too small and uncomfortable for me. I have perfectly fine eye sight, I would just like to look at my screen and see everything there, not have to focus.

I play @1280*768. I can easily play @ 1920*1080 on my 24" monitor while my dual monitor sits there with NO lag on any game, one being BF BC2. I spent about $1100 on my system. If i total it up I spent less then that but yeah, its gonna last me another 2-3 years easily.

You have to be a fool to ALWAYS want the best hardware, you wont win and youll waste a lot of money.

This argument always comes and goes....

*stands up* I was a PC gamer, well still am abit :p, but over the past 8 years I played all my games on the PC.

1: Yes, the majority of PC games are cheaper. One of the pluses I see in PC gaming.

2: Depends on the game, but generally I have no problems with console controls.

3: I look to the future not the past.

4: Expensive for a monthly sub ?8-10 pm and in most cases pay for expansions

5: Only if you got the cash, which I don't.

I'm moving more and more towards console gaming, the benefiit for me is low priced trade-ins (which are cheaper than PC games) so I have to wait a few weeks/months from release but thats fine with me. so for consoles my argument is:

1: For newly released games PCs are cheaper, if your willing to wait you can get console pre-owned even cheaper.

2: The only one issue I had is with FPS games, but now I actually prefer the controller to a mouse and keyboard.

3: Irrellivant to me

4: Multiplayer games work well, no MMOs but not interested in that now.

5: PS3: BluRay, Media centre and good graphics for the price of a netbook.

Lets make an example of basic bare bones bleeding edge system

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115212&cm_re=975-_-19-115-212-_-Product $989

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150460&cm_re=5970-_-14-150-460-_-Product $729 X2

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188059 $479

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145271 $424

all up $3320 approx so if gonna burn money away on bleeding edge up to date best of best stuff you'd be looking as of current something within that price range give or take every 4-6 months or so as products are refreshed and updated.

+1 ... like team fortress 2 is on the consoles, but the original team fortress is a quake mod...

1. Cheaper Games

Not really, some games last year were quite expensive.

2. Better Controls

Debatable, for example when you are locked into a certain control config (ie drving on Borderlands eurgh)

3. Play the classics

My favourite classic is on the MegaDrive II (Sonic)

4. Online Worlds

I'm sure you can get online stuff on consoles too.

5. Play the bleeding edge

Great if you have the money.

This is coming from a PC gamer btw ;)

Bad Company 2 (and hell, most games coming out in the near future) - If you don't buy it new you have to cough up ?6 for two maps so it won't be as cheap as a PC. ;)

For reference btw: My last PC cost me about ?500~ give or take and lasted me two years. Spending another ?300 soon to keep it going for another year and a half. Not much of a price to pay to play with high rez textures, 60 FPS and AF & AA at x8. ;)

Yes but I don't have ?300 to keep my PC up to date, thats the problem with PC gaming. Atleast with a console I know that the games wont change much until a new console comes out. Oh and playing PC games 1280x1024 (if the game isn't too taxing, I sometimes have to drop the resolutions) on a 19" monitor compared to 1080p on a 37" TV......I'll pick the TV :p

This (Y)

Well unlucky, some people can't afford PC gaming unfotunately. Well I've got the choice of a 23" (1920 x 1200) monitor for shooters and my 32" (1080p) TV connected via VGA if I want to play say Batman: AA with my controller at 60 frames with PhysX. :D

It's nice to have the choice. :)

Ive a pretty decent PC setup, I tend to play MMOs only, along with FPSs that yeah admittedly I also have on consoles.

It's nice to be PC gamer too, I get to hide away from the family and not take up the TV, can also browse the web/listen to music/chat to friends at the same time. PC gaming for me is just a bit more involving than sitting on the couch with a pad, but different strokes for different strokes.

I do have to agree that the list in the first post is BS however, I dont 'need' to be a PC gamer, for the same reason I dont 'need' to be a console gamer - Im a gamer at heart and Ill play whatever game I like on whichever platform it's released for - you dont need to sell me on it!

1. Cheaper Games

True

2. Better Controls

Subjective (I disagree, I use a controller on my PC as well as my console)

3. Play the classics

I have been playing classics on my console for 4+ years now

4. Online Worlds

I have been playing online with my console since Xbox Live launched.

5. Play the bleeding edge

Huh?

    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
    • You did take leaf out of Trumps book already and had brexit - only to harm yourself. The same goes with this AI nonsense. The obvious solution for these companies is to move their head office to Brussels. I can see quite much irony there... 🙂
    • Thank gawd AT&T never worked with the US gov....
    • Wonder if they are trying to slow down Linux traction (not saying this is the only factor) in the consumer space. With the most pressure probably being steam deck/box, etc.
