Image get distorted after reformatting ..

Hello friends,

I have recently reformatted my Mac laptop and transfered all the data to an external hard drive. However when I copied the data back (mostly personal & family images for the last 10 years), they all came out faulty like this (various part of the image got shifted horizontally, or completely blanked out) even though the thumbnail can be seen and the size is still the same (I guess so).

Can you please tell me what the problem is and is there any way I can still restore those?

So when you copied it back was it to their original location? Also what about the copies that are on the external drive? When you open them are they like this too?

Are you using the same version of whatever software you were? Meaning when you formated, perhaps you need to update iPhoto??

Honestly the truth is does not look good. Hate to say it.
