Getting a replacement MacBook

Recommended Posts

I have an iMac and a MacBook but my MacBook is my main work horse.

I fell down a flight of stairs in Wellington and unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on which way you look at it), my laptop in my bag broke my fall. So I have some questions regarding my replacement - I was tempted to go for a Windows 7 computer but given my experiences with the Windows world in the past I am nervous about having 'buyers regret' so I am going to stick it out and do it safe.

Anyway, here are the questions:

1) Should I wait for the MacBook/MacBook Pro refresh? I have heard rumours that it was going to be refreshed any time soon and wonder whether I am better off waiting or should I just get what there is?

2) Should I pay a little bit extra and get the MacBook Pro 13.3 Inch model instead of the normal white MacBook? the aluminium unibody is super sexy but at the same time - are there any people here with buyers regret as so far as problematic wireless, the laptop getting hot or any other gotchas?

Thank you for any advice that you may have :)

I would personally wait for the refresh. Like you I own a iMac and MacBook (although I just sold my MacBook before the refresh), but I use my iMac all the time. I sold my MacBook though because I knew the refresh would decrease the value of it by a lot since I had 1st gen uni-body. The refresh is literally right around the corner, and since it is likely to include more then just CPU/memory upgrades, I would highly suggest waiting if you can.

Strange that I only start getting feedback one week after I made the post lol

I've already bought it, 13.3inch MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz model. I am very happy and given the minor update that the i3 and i5 bring (I doubt we'll see i7 in MacBook Pro's), I am not worried about not having the bleeding edge, infact I'm happy that I don't because based the serial number decoding my MacBook was assembled around a month ago which means any bugs or issues in the first batch would have sorted it self out by now :)

Anyway, I am a very happy camper and looking forward to seeing 10.6.3 released some time soon.

    • Too soon, I'm still not over this death!
    • Normally, I admit when a title is clickbait (unfortunately, it's become somewhat necessary in AI-dominated news sections today), but in this case, all supported versions is implied and doesn't need to be spelled out in the title. Of course, I'm covering a Patch Tuesday update but that is only available to supported Windows SKUs. All our coverage relates to supported Windows software and SKUs only unless we expressly state that it's "unsupported", "unofficial", or "third-party". I'm sorry, but supported/official SKUs don't need to be spelled out as such in every Neowin headline.
    • ALL versions or ALL SUPPORTED versions? Neowin does it again.
    • But the reality is it will work for people's needs, and they don't care about the technology that makes it. Clearly not everyone's needs, but that low end space where personal laptops were only used to type emails, watch content and browse websites, but they didn't want to do that on a small screen device. Heck, writing that out I can now see the connection and reason it'll do so well. Apple is about experience. If the experience is bad, they don't release it. Low end Windows laptop manufacturers up until this point have not taken that into consideration ever before, so slow laggy usage with brittle slimey plastic shells were common. I hope that the low end space at least creates better physical products that last a bit longer, and if Microsoft get their act together, they could also have a solid OS on such low end hardware that would actually make the experience work for what the hardware was intended for. The fact that the CPU is a "cellphone", sorry mobile phone processor is irrelevant. It's about the experience, and so far, that sounds quite solid.
