Microsoft on copy and paste in Windows Phone 7 Series: 'people don'

Recommended Posts

The tables have turned! Microsoft and Microsoft fanboy's bashed Apple for not having copy and paste, now look who doesn't.

I am getting WP7S regardless and I hope they implement it like Apple did soon. Maybe have it as an option for power users, since you think that "people don't do that".

hahah I must admit it's pretty funny ;) It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for all the bashing they did (I don't remember last time I used copy/paste on my iphone....)

This is what a moderator on the Windows Phone 7 forums posted about Copy & Paste:

We started building the new Windows Phone 7 Series around two big but simple ideas: Your phone should understand what you care about most - and your phone should enable you to do the things you want in fewer steps. That's why Windows Phone 7 Series will not initially offer copy and paste. We looked at some of the most common uses for copy and paste, and simplified them with a single-tap action. Say you're looking at an appointment in your calendar. You need to know when the meeting starts - but you also need to know where to go. In the past you would have to copy the address, open a mapping application or site, paste from the clipboard and then click a button to get a result. With Windows Phone 7 Series, you just click on that address and jump straight to a map. If you're surfing the Web and you come across a piece of information you'd like to know more about, you don't have to exit your browser and go into a search application. Just highlight the word and click the search key. The new search results are now available at your fingertips. And of course, Windows Phone 7 Series also supports clickable phone numbers in emails, in browser, and in search results. In our early testing people have been pleased with this approach - but we're always listening to feedback, and we will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear. _marshall backstage moderator

thanks for sharing. I still call their reasoning B***t. What if I want to share that address information with someone else? There are numerous occasions when one can't simply do without copy&paste. A very simple thing, say you received some tracking information and want to track the package information with a 3rd party app. What are you going to do? Instead of making lame excuses, they should just say, we won't have this feature released!

I use copy paste on my pre all the time. It is essential and must be included in the OS from day 0. I can think of million use cases where I need copy paste on a phone.

* Surfing on the web I find sth that I want to remember for later. I copy it to a note or task...

* many times notes in appointments have infos I want to share with others. I just copy them to an email...

* surfing the web I find an address and want to find it with Google Maps and not Bing...

* posting links, text from email to forums, facebook, twitter, etc

* using Excel, OneNote and Word on the phone. Office without copy and paste?

I use Copy and Paste all the time on my iPhone. Especially when writing email just being able to copy images or even snippets of webpages in to a message is incredibly smart. Microsoft missing the boat on this one. At-least for power users. I'm sure most consumers who just want Facebook on the front of there phone won't care. And that seems where Windows Phone 7 is aimed.

I almost never use copy/paste, but when I do need to, not having it would be the biggest pain in the world (and was before apple added it)

Windows Phone 7 Series isn't out yet, so lets see what happens till then.

It sounds to me like they're planning to add alot of stuff back in, maybe before RTM, or shortly after it. Lots of little things like this always get a replay with "not initially" or "we're looking at what people want". I'm thinking that getting this new single-tap feature working perfectly is their top priority before they open up the C/P bits.

If anything devs and users are getting more vocal, if you don't like it go to the phone teams blog and post your complaint so they can hear you, don't just moan and bitch in here.

The amount of news/info on the WP7 stuff thats come out recently, I think they're trying to get as much feedback on the OS before it reaches retail.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of complaints will be resolved before or soon after release, as well as the "missing features".

They're taking the "let's act lazy and see how people react" route? I'm not too sure if that's part of Marketing 101. :p

It may not be important but it's a feature than even the most basic smartphones support. Something tells me they're going to add it in the future.

    • Password Safe 3.72.0 by Razvan Serea Password Safe is a password database utility. Like many other such products, commercial and otherwise, it stores your passwords in an encrypted file, allowing you to remember only one password (the "safe combination"), instead of all the username/password combinations that you use. Once stored, your user names and passwords are just a few clicks away. Using Password Safe you can organize your passwords using your own customizable references—for example, by user ID, category, web site, or location. You can choose to store all your passwords in a single encrypted master password list (an encrypted password database), or use multiple databases to further organize your passwords (work and home, for example). And with its intuitive interface you will be up and running in minutes. PasswordSafe was originally designed by the renowned security technologist Bruce Schneier and released as a free utility application. Password Safe 3.72.0 changelog: Fixed bugs Improved font scale handling - should resolve font size issues on high resolution displays. • I've got a SoundBlasterX G6 that I use in my streaming setup. Sounds great to me and I've had zero issues with the ancient software package so far in Win11. That G6 has 7.1, Dolby, fully working SPDIF and since it's a USB device it's outside of my rig so I don't have to worry about EMF distortion. Looks like for now this is a pass for me as I think I have better hardware....
