Microsoft on copy and paste in Windows Phone 7 Series: 'people don'

Recommended Posts

Relatively speaking, if you put it that way, WM7 have not released to the public yet.

And you are wrong on the iTouch. When released it came with Firmware 1.0. Then 2.0 come out, $10. Then 3.0, another $10.

So? Microsoft has come out and already said that there would be NO C&P is WP7S. Let the people's voices be heard and changes will come, hopefully.

Apple didn't tell them to buy OS 2.0, with no C&P. iPod Touch 1G owners could have paid up to $20 for updates. iPod Touch 2G owners (me), have paid up to $10 for updates. So no, that's flawed.

I gave up, you win.

But the the iTouch price.

When release with with 1.0, the to January Update (1.1.1 I think) which cost $19.99 plus tax (source). Then to Firmware 2.0, that's $9.95 (source). Then to 3.0, another $9.95 (source).

SO the total come to be $40 plus tax. You are right that Aplle did not force them to buy it, well they did with 2.0, App Store. But still they charge for something that should have been free.

Oh and don't forget iPhone 3G doesn't have a compass.

I wasn't trying to win anything, just trying to get my point across. :p

I did not know that they charged $20 for the update to 1.1.1. I am wrong in that area then.

Free, who knows. It's Apple's product and they can do whatever they want with it. The only reason that iPhone users are getting it for free is because they have the phone and internet plan with it, so they are not charged for it.

Also, what does the compass have to do with C&P?

Nothing

I put it there without thinking, I think I was trying to say that WM7 came with compass when released and Apple did not, took them 2 hardware revisions to have it.

"People don't do that" translates to: "I don't do that and it's too hard to program"

It isn't as hard as you think, at least for MS. They already have it in their current mobile OS. It is just a dumb design decision!

Nothing

I think that is not a fair comparison. MS will be releasing WM7 in 2011, not in 2007. Compass and other features are pretty standard in almost any smartphone nowadays.

Yeah, I was about to delete that but Tech Star already quoted me :D

Oh and C/P will come to WM7 in a future update, maybe sooner than Apple, took them 2 years.

You're missing the point. For there to be a standard edit control for every app to use someone still has to write the code/APIs from scratch.

Now you are moving the goalpost. Before it was adding the parsing feature, now it's writing an edit control from scratch. What's next, they also have to write the entire operating system it runs on?

I think you will find that Silverlight already has an edit control that exists independently of this feature. In fact, it already existed before WP7 and just had to be adapted. Silverlight is not new.

I don't know how basic or complex what MS is doing is, but to say that it's so simple that it could be done in one afternoon? That I don't buy.

I've asked several times what's supposed to be so new and revolutionary about it. No one has answered.

This being a new OS one could take a wild guess that MS had to write up it's own regex engine from scratch. Now do you think such things are done in one afternoon as well? Honestly?

Yes, and first they had to make the entire OS, and the emulator and developer environment for it, and Windows 7 to host it on, and build the PC to run 7 on by hand. Blah blah.

As for a regexp engine, Microsoft already has several. In fact, one is already part of .NET and is thus already in WP7.

You seem to be under the impression that WP7 is something brand new written from scratch, when it really isn't. It's just an updated version of Windows Mobile (which in turn is based around CE) running the latest .NET CF and an adapted version of Silverlight and XNA.

No one has said they're not implementing it, my point was that it's of lower priority compared to the new feature they've talked about.

Well, actually, you said this "new feature" is more complex, which is very dubious. A clipboard and cut/copy/paste functionality is fairly complex (ignoring the fact that most of the required functionality is already there and just has to be given a suitable frontend).

I certainly understand that this "new feature" might be more interesting to the majority of users if you had to pick just one of the two, but I don't see why you would have to. This isn't something writing software in his basement after work, it's a flagship product from one of the largest software companies in the world with some of the best expertise out there.

I think the issue is that WP7 is in between Silverlight 3 and 4. I believe Silverlight 4 added support for copy and pasting text files within Silverlight applications without too much work, the reason this worked is because Silverlight 4 added the ability to have HTML content within Silverlight apps. I'm not completely sure about it, but I think that's what I read.

I think the issue is that WP7 is in between Silverlight 3 and 4.

WP7 is Silverlight 4 (with some phone-specific changes). Not that it matters much, because Silverlight 3 can support cut and paste just fine (and CE and .NET already has a clipboard.)

Now, I am not saying that there isn't some work involved in piecing all the parts together and giving it a frontend that makes sense on a phone, but Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha, we aren't talking about some teenager programming in his basement after school. Not having these things is a choice made by Microsoft because they don't want to spend any money on a flagship product.

Oh and C/P will come to WM7 in a future update, maybe sooner than Apple, took them 2 years.

Indeed. I'm sure that if they're not working on C&P at this exact instant, they'll start working on it after the release of the first WP7S devices and the consequent backlash. They'll definitely have it sooner than Apple had it in the iPhone, I'm willing to bet on it.

That said, things would have been a lot better for MS if they had said something along the lines of "we're working on it, but it won't be in version 1.0 of the software". Instead, they had to try to make some brazen statement about how people don't use copy and paste, and they ended up looking rather foolish in the process.

    • I am not surprised because life is the product of a lot of biochemical and physical processes that releases various energies as a by-product. The only thing new here is the detection of these photon emissions. The researches noted this "glow" is not a metaphysical one. They don't even immediately end when one is dead. Things like fires, light bulbs, and on a bigger scale stars release a lot more "light" and they are hardly alive.
