Out of Focus pictures

Is it normal behavious for a DSLR (D90 in my case) to be out of focus on DOF by around 1-2cm ?

I had my doubts so I took a magazine with lots of text and placed it on my desk. Took my camera on a tripod and placed it at a 45 degrees angle and took a picture at a particular word. The part that was perfectly in focus wasn't the word i previously focused on but another word 2 centimeters below. Is this normal behaviour or is there something wrong with my camera ?

most likely a lens issue.

What lens is it?

it doesn't have to be damaged for it to go out of focus. My Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 needed to be recalibrated after about 18 months.

The camera was indeed dropped from inside a lowepro bag. The 18-105mm lens was knocked out of focus really badly but the camera itself seemed okay. The lens in question is a Nikon 50mm 1.8D.

I tried the test with my other lens too, a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 but it was much harder to judge because of the wider DOF. I'll try again today when I Come back from work.

How much does it cost to recalibrate a lens and/or camera ?

My 50mm f1.8D isn't super accurate either. And it's never been dropped.

Tamron calibrated my lens for for free. I dunno what nikon does.
