Say It Ain't So: Apple's 'Get A Mac' Ads Ending?

Floppy-haired Justin Long has said in an interview with the AV Club that the 'Get A Mac' adverts "might be done...I think they're going to move on." Move on to more ads with disembodied hands and loud indie-pop?

Long's full quote on the matter:

"You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John, I think they're going to move on. I can't say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John. I've become very close with him, and he's one of my dearest, greatest friends. It was so much fun to go do that job, because there's not a lot to it for me. A lot of it is just keeping myself entertained between takes, and there's no one I'd rather do it with than John."

Money for nothing and your chicks for free, eh Long? Maybe that's got something to do with it.

What a shame.[sarcmark]

Bout time if you ask me. I always thought those ads were crappy. They should instead show off the actual operating system features and hardware. Adverts dedicated to Time Machine, Spaces, Quicklook, Spotlight, iPhoto, iMovie and so on. None of this 'I'm a PC and I'm a Mac' rubbish.

The first ones were ok, but lately they have become complete garbage and just showed how scared Apple was.

lol - Apple has made more money in recent quarters than in the companies entire history. They got over 40 billion dollars just sitting in the bank and selling more Macs than ever before  But yeah you're totally right they are scared!

Most of that money is from the iPhone platform and the app store, rather than from their Macs and their OS. Also how many people who buy those Macs install Windows as their default OS (something both companies benefit from, Apple from the hardware, Windows from the software).

These ads target the software side of things, and didn't Windows 7 get double Mac OS X market share in 3 months? Hell the beta/RC had more users than Mac OS X.

Also, I'm not sure why Apple has $40 billion just sitting in the bank. Not exactly the best business decision as that money could be put to better use but hey if it works for them w/e.

Yes, most of that money is from the iPhone, but Mac adoption rates have been on a steady rise since the Get A Mac ad era. Also, I imagine quite a few at least run Windows in VMware Fusion or Parallels, which still benefits Microsoft, but most probably don't run Windows full time in Boot Camp.

And when you count how many non-Apple PCs there are out there, that makes sense, doesn't it? It's a great stat for Microsoft, but it's stupid to compare Windows 7's market share to OS X's market share. If you wanted to be a little bit fairer (though slightly skewed to Apple), do a per-capita count comparison of the adoption rate of something like Snow Leopard vs. Windows 7. I bet Snow Leopard wins that one. :p

Save it for a rainy day? Besides, it's not like they've just stopped all expenses and are hoarding money. :p
