If you like OpenDesire then try DeFrost 2.0e which has a more featurepacked stomach. I switched from OpenDesire to DeFrost and it's amazing and supports h.264 recording in the camcorder though at 480p. 720p is coming later although I wouldn't want it until at least 24fps is fixed.

I also flashed Unrevoked recovery using a modded version of the recovery image to support EXT4 partitions, now I have a permanent recovery so no need to keep an update.zip or use the PC to enter recovery.

The main reason to choose a non SenseUI ROM is that you can do this:

I took the plunge and rooted my Desire too, after that I decided I wanted Android 2.2 so flashed the DJ Droid rom which allowed me to keep the HTC Sense interface :)

I also changed the launcher to the one included with the Evo 4G, Everything appears to work pretty well so far, 720p video recording is a bit poor... around 16-18 fps at the moment. Apparently that is been worked on, however its not a show stopper by any means.

The portable Wi-Fi hotspot feature will also be very handy to have.

I'm very happy with my rooted Desire at the moment (Y)

Top man.

My bro won't let me do anything other than rooting it. He thinks I may f' it all up.

Ah well, will have to get my own android phone then.

Any chance of telling me where you got that launcher? it looks rather neat :p

You won't regret it, and the Sense ROM based on the 2.2 leak is actually very stable on the whole. I personally am using Paul O Brien's MCR base, it's a little more stable than the original leak, and he is currently working on merging FRF95 into the base. You can view the thread Here

I also have access to the Kitchen (I have a sub) so if anyone would like a ROM baked, PM me with the options you are after and I would be happy to look into doing it for you (No 0 posters, reputable members only)

Great, I am now getting the error message "process.com.android.mms" every-time I try to open my messages which forces itself to close  Would anyone here know of a fix?

I am really tempted to root my HTC Desire, not only for the better features it can bring me but the fact it might also fix this annoying problem (Which won't even go away after a factory reset!)

... I just need the guts to do it :p

I'll probably get an Ad-Free membership over at MoDaCo as well.

Will try to order the Samsung Galaxy S this week or next and then be busy baking my own custom ROMS for it.

It's well worth it, the online kitchen is awesome :D

I am guessing that you installed a Software upgrade? I have never seen that issue myself. What carrier are you with, and what SW version? I have tried the 2.2 ROM with Sense, and Paul's MCR version 3.1 (software edition 1.21.405) and neither have shown this issue.

Also, in Paul's latest guide, he has implemented a risk free root option, and even if you did get a USB brick, it is actually reasonably easy to fix, but if you root, and then use unrEVOked 2 to flash a custom recovery, the issue is practically non existent. I have had mine rooted for a month, and probably flashed about 20 times, and no issues here.

Due to get my Desire Thursday, I have one issue though, I have two PAYG sims, one on three and the other on o2. The guy at o2 said that I would not be able to send sms/mms messages on the desire and they will not support it as they dont sell the Desire on PAYG, the othjer issue is that Three have also said they will not give me the settings unless I buy a Three branded handset from them, which I cannot do.

Thus has anyone here bought a Desire and is using it with either O2 or Three PAYG sims and if so is all working fine, and how easy was it to get settings etc?

they both telling fibs, as i'm sure you are aware.. gsm phones do not need any form of 'carrier support' to function on a network at all..

the o2 PAYG sim will work fine.. apart from of course inputting the mms settings, iv just noticed that mine dont work (vodafone) so ill sort that out on the weekend..

re: three i dont know of their network being anything special, but if its anythign like vodafone, orange, o2 etc.. just stick you sim in it will work to call/sms automatically but you might have to fiddle manually with mms/3g a bit

settings are readily avail on google

they just tell you these things because they assume you are the lowest common denominator of user.. i.e. a dumbass :)

As said already, the guy at O2 was chatting bull.

As for Three, when you get the phone and put your SIM in there, call them up from the phone and tell the customer representative to send you the necessary WAP/MMS settings. Just install them when they come. For some reason my brother didn't need to do it. He popped his Three SIM into the Desire and got onto the internet straight away, no settings needed. His Desire was SIM Free.

Cheers guys for the replies, I was just a bit dubious as ?400 for a phone that might not work is a lot of money.

I love the phone as have used a friends on numerous occasions and I hopefully will be rooting mine in orer to install apps to the mem card etc (he does not want to to incase he breaks it!!)

This thread at XDA. Though the one on the first post isn't what I'm using it's somewhere in the thread :p but that is for Sense on Froyo. Theres one on the second last page I think, theres no screenshot so I'm not 100% on if it's the same one I'm using but updated, I assume so since its in that thread though :p

Well it still seems to be happening when I do a factory reset as well  I'm with Vodafone UK, on a sim contract because it's an unlocked phone. What's frustrating is that this bug seems to be with mms, a feature I don't even want to use. It just forces my sms/mms reader to close each time so I can't view my messages unless I go the long way (of finding each person, then checking for message history)

Yup thats where I got it from, the version i flashed is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7158760&postcount=122

However I flashed the stock HtcClockWidget.apk back after though as I didn't like the modified clock widget.

I might take you up on that in the future :) although I should probably sub myself if I start using one of his roms.

Ah well, will have to get my own android phone then.

Unless you some how mess the recovery partition up I think its pretty hard to totally brick your phone.

If anything did go wrong you should still be able to hold the volume down key when powering the phone on and boot in to recovery mode to re flash.

Don't quote me on that though, i am still very much a newbie when it comes to Android.

I can confirm on Three all you need to do is put the sim in the Desire and MMS / Internet will be setup automatically.

If you then go in to My Three and specify the phone you have as the HTC Desire you can download a modified Skype app that will make calls just like a standard phone call and not over the data connection. You get 5000 free Skype mins on pay and go so no point in wasting data when you don't need to.

Personally I would recommend putting a goldcard into your phone and flashing a generic ROM if you aren't comfortable with rooting, it is probably a bug in Vodafone's firmware.

Well, after a few weeks fighting with Sunrise and HTC....i finally gave up.

I am really disappointed.

My advice for all Desire users....be really careful with the humidity problem. A slightly sign of that on the phone and the warranty is voided.

Even tho that wasnt the cause of my problem as stated by the repair center.

I simply decided to destroy the device. I'll send it as a gift to HTC headquarters as a simbol of my dissatisfaction.

It is time for me to try another brand.

Good luck to you.

err.. sorry why did you do that again?

Could someone who owns the device let me know whether, when a pair of headphones is plugged in, the alarm still goes of through the phone's speaker? I use my phone also as alarm clock, but I tend to listen to music in the evening through headphones and wouldn't want to miss hearing the alarm the following morning.

Wanted to get one of these bad boys in September around bday time, but I think I'll wait and see if that rumoured HD model is real. HD recording is a must for a feature, but I do know the Desire is getting it with 2.2.

I'm gasping to get away from my 3G/Apple :(

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
