I'm actually going to wait for my CD to arrive. That way within a few weeks there will be some bugs ironed out when I use the update manager

Easily fixed with the partition manager.

It allows windows to boot up to the welcome screen and then resets the laptop, the dualboot works, but it messes with windows somehow

soon as I delete the linux partition, windows is happy again

I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm pretty much a noob to Linux, so unfortunately I can't provide much help. Maybe there is an ACPI/Power Management set of drivers you can download for the problematic PCs similar to Windows.

Also, I would check the BIOS of those PCs and see what the ACPI mode is set to. For Suspend to RAM to work I believe you need a mode that has S3 enabled, so either S1 and S3, or just S3.

I got a question about the shipit CDs

They don't give you an option to select 32 or 64bit like before. Do they now send both versions?

As far as I know, it's 32 bit they ship. I don't remember being able to choose when you order.

Separate partition or from *within Windows* (the Wubi Method)?

I used the latter with Ubuntu 10.04 RTW (and had with Kubuntu 10.04 RC, both x64) and 7 x64 and have (and had) nary a quibble.

The only quibble I have is with Ubuntu itself (and it has to do with GNOME, not KDE), so I will be adding KDE to the mix and moving my default login there.

Is the overlapping partition data still there? You can do the fdisk -l thing from within the LiveCD and it will look at the Windows setup as it is working.

As I said in your technical support thread, the overlapping Windows partition data is NOT normal. It is a bad thing.

Ubuntu does weird things with wireless for me as well. It toggles my wireless switch even though it is set to on. Very weird issues. The only reliable way to use it is in a virtual machine.

Why on earth would anyone pick satellite for internet? The latency would make it useless for just about anything. The insane caps make it even worse. Have something against DSL or Cable?

Correct, I moved with my parents out in the boonies. In another couple months I'll have an apartment in the city and sweet cable internet. :p

Well to get back on topic I am contemplating on installing Ubuntu 9.10 and just running an upgrade, to save myself from downloading the full distro tonight.

I didnt have time to mess, my gf was rushing me to get windows working again so she could play her games, and I couldnt be bothered to argue so I just did a repair to get back into windows, wiped Ubuntu and restored the MBR

She has only a few levels left on 1 game and I told her its getting wiped after that, so I`ll try again with a fresh windows install soon, but for now I am using Wubi :)

Quite happy with the netbook edition on my Samsung NC20. Only thing missing is the brightness settings. The volume buttons work great, but not the brightness ones. Didn't on the desktop release either. Only in the brightness notification did appeared.

It also looks to be a little more friendly on my battery. So far at least.?

Try the brigtness script on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Samsung_N150, if you search for Samsung on the Arch Wiki you'll get scripts for other models as well, they are mostly the same but

Though I'm amused that they assume I know what file format the script should be in. What should I use as file type for the script posted there? And what to call it?

I cannot stand this whole "let's move the buttons on the left" thing. Yeah, I know you can change it back to the right with some annoying gconf editing, but it breaks the new themes because the groove the buttons are in only works with the min and max switched weirdly.

Now it's gonna be really annoying to find themes. You're gonna have half of em made for the left-side button arrangement and then you're gonna have the other have for the right-side button arrangement, it's gonna be really irritating now. I'm pretty sure the majority of linux converts are from windows, not mac...
