I cannot stand this whole "let's move the buttons on the left" thing. Yeah, I know you can change it back to the right with some annoying gconf editing, but it breaks the new themes because the groove the buttons are in only works with the min and max switched weirdly.

Now it's gonna be really annoying to find themes. You're gonna have half of em made for the left-side button arrangement and then you're gonna have the other have for the right-side button arrangement, it's gonna be really irritating now. I'm pretty sure the majority of linux converts are from windows, not mac...

So far, only the default theme and it's light counterpart use that button layout. Switching to another theme uses that theme's default setup (which is on the right, 99% of the time), but manually changing the layout is possibly and easy with programs like Ubuntu Tweak.

Not sure where the option is in gconf-editor, but I used Ubuntu-tweak and it has an option.

I made that mistake too during the beta but even on Windows I accidently close out or maximize something unintended due to my sensitive touch-pad

I've mentioned this one or twice before in other threads, but since you guys are talking about the buttons, I'll mention it here too. If you want to download a package of pretty decent themes, check out the Bisigi themes: http://lifehacker.com/5515403/bisigi-themes-remix-linux-in-eye+opening-ways

I believe they are all using buttons on the right, and even if you don't like any of the theme defaults, it provides a bunch of good themes as a base to customize. Install info is here: http://www.bisigi-project.org/?page_id=8〈=en

So I was out all day yesterday so I didn't get to participate in any discussions. Everyone get upgraded ok and like it so far? Although I installed beta 1 a few weeks ago to play around and see what 10.04 was like on my MacBook, I find myself not wanting to go back to OS X (and I haven't used my Win 7 machine for anything other than media storage in months). The way I see it, the time has finally come where we have a great version of Windows, OS X, and Linux, that are all very capable of being a primary OS (at least for me). Choices are getting tough, but being free certainly helps Linux out.

I just installed (or tired to) and when the PC rebooted and ejected the CD, a shed load of I/O error came on screen. Now i've lost about 30Gb space, and my PC still boots straight to windows.

Oh well, time to get trying again.

Though I'm amused that they assume I know what file format the script should be in. What should I use as file type for the script posted there? And what to call it?

Sorry, my bad. It's just a bash script, so it's universal across distro's - the wiki page tells you what to call it (backlight), where to put it:-

sudo cp backlight /usr/local/sbin/backlight

Gnome "keyboard Shortcut" preferences

Raise backlight - sudo /usr/local/sbin/backlight up - Fn+Up arrow

Lower backlight sudo /usr/local/sbin/backlight down - Fn+Down arrow

You'll have to give the commands rights within Sudo as well, as explained on the wiki, on Arch you can:-

EDITOR=nano visudo

Really not sure it this works on Ubuntu or not. Then add :-

Cmnd_Alias NETBOOK_CMDS = /usr/local/sbin/backlight

to Cmnd_Alias section and :-

%users ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: NETBOOK_CMDS

to the bottom.

Samsung netbook brighness is borked on all distro's, hence the only way to get it working is to script it in.

It looks real nice (I'm used to Mac OS X, so I like the window widgets over on the left), but it seems the .iso is crapping out on me. Whether I do a direct download or a torrent, it seems to be "completed" around 13-16 MB and then when I try to install it, it just hangs. Surely it's around 600-700 MB, right?

And yes, my Internet connection is fine and everything else downloads fine, so I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else of if it's just me?

if i liked it i will use it as my main OS, but from looks it seems sweet, i loved the old ones, but wanna give it a try too........downloading it now, thanx for the info :)
