anyone else having a blank "Custom Value" page pop up along with their homepage when they start firefox?

Yeah I got the same. I got rid of it by resetting my homepage. However, for some reason each time I start Firefox the release notes page is displayed. Hmmm.

Also seems like this beta is a bit snapper than B4. I know they enabled hardware acceleration by default in this build but I also had it enabled before.

b5 Seems faster scrolling through pages and tabs. Add-ons window is empty, text looks like **** :(

goto

about:config

in the URL bar, and search for "gfx.direct2d.disabled"

Change to true and the text becomes nice again but you loose 2D acceleration

Thanks, saved me digging through this thread to find that ;)

So whats the deal there, will it ever have 2D acceleration and look good?

I mean, this is pretty bad, right?

Edit: lol, should have moved the babes thread tabs

Edit 2: So much better with it off.

Seems a much better build, still got a damn annoying issue of having to click twice in the post reply box to be able to type, and clicking on a reply to PM email, takes me to the PM, and then immediately to a new screen with only an Advert on it, and have to click back, this happens a few times before it will stay on the PM

2D acceleration makes text fuzzy too

I think the second one is definitely a bug with Neowin ( I'm sure The_Decryptor mentioned it before). I see it quite when loading a page or when I've just replied to a post and the page is reloading. I suffer from the first one too but I'm unsure whether its Firefox or Neowin. I've had b2/b3.

Hello.

I've been using firefox 4 beta for weeks.

Now I updated myself from beta 4 to beta 5 and... firefox fonts look weird!

I mean, the text on the websites and on the program itself (tab names for example) seems different and it's giving me headaches...

I didn't notice anything related to that in the changelog, but they are clearly different... and they aren't as smooth as they used to be.

I'm using Windows 7 x64

Anyone else noticed that?

Or, you could just disable the hardware acceleration through the Options in the Firefox Menu.

You could but it wouldnt be half as much fun lol

I have no idea what its all about, maybe cleartype ? I havent really looked into it, just found a quick fix

Yea the advert bug is very annoying, taken 2 attempts to post this so far because if it -

The post double click bug happens to me on other forums too, so not specific to neowin, but could be specific to the board used

Something's still a bit weird. Originally on first start of b5, I got the release notes in one tab, and 'Custom Value' in the other. I've reset my homepage which seemed to cure the 'Custom Value' problem but the release notes are still present. And it now seems that Firefox isn't remembering my home page and is resetting back to 'Custom Value'.

The only thing I can think of so far is that I should try creating a new profile, but I haven't to when upgrading to any of the other betas.

Possibly. Either way, hopefully it gets fixed soon!

They definitely have to do something about the text before the final release. Too many normal users will be turned off by how bad it all looks.

I've had to deal with horrible text in the nightlies for months :( I can't wait for the day they fix it.

Thats just how directwrite text looks. Its something MS has to fix. The regular GDI cleartype only has horizontal anti-aliasing, DirectWrite has Horizontal and vertical. Directwrite looks quite bad to most people at small font sizes, but large bold fonts definitely look better. MS needs to make dw look better at small font sizes, as right now it looks too blurry. Here's a decent article about the differences:

It may have something to do with the browser cache. I set Firefox to never remember history and the problem seems to have gone away.

Is there anyway I can get rid of the Feedback button in the beta? I've tried removing it in customization options but it seems to come back when I restart Firefox.

Disabling it in the Add-Ons Manager option menu will do the trick---->Feedback 1.0.3 by Mozilla Corporation

What is bad exactly? If you're talking about the text on the tabs and toolbar, that is going to be fixed.

If you're talking about the text on the webpage, you should try the cleartype tuner.

That's mine on the right.

If thats yours on the left, the text is horrible - cant you see the ghost fuzzy outline round the text ? - It makes it look like a really old dying LCD

The Option is in Advanced, then General if your talking about hardware acceleration.

Oh I see it, yeah that's enabled... My bad, they really didn't specify it was under Advanced. :p

Actually even enabling it in options doesn't mean it's turned on...

Beta 5 for me is crashing far more with flash content that Beta 4 did, I have to keep quiting the plug-in process to get things going again.

Same, Flash is three times as slow as it was in Beta 4, and five times as slow than 3.6.x, I went back to 3.6.9...so... Hopefully this'll be ready when it hits RTM.

    • Thanks for liking it! 😊 That's Arch Linux with Gnome.
    • LOL. Can't even quote and edit a comment correctly. Figures you're a Linux user.
    • It won't perform hugely better than the 3080 unless you're VRAM limited in games. Have you tried putting new thermal pads on them 3080 and giving it a good clean to see if you can regain your temps and overclock?
