Both AVG and Avast and both put out nasty signatures that caused damage to people's OS's, AVG on multiple occasions. AVG has crap detection to.

Avira and MSE are my recommendations. MSE seems to be the best overall though and makes me wonder why anyone pays for AV.

Why bother with free ones when the best is so cheap ? (?5 at most you should be paying per year)

I use Kaspersky Internet Security, has a firewall and everything else which is more important these days, ?3 a licence.

I've bought 20 copies recently for friends & family.

I've been using Avast Free for years now and am happy with it; Avast 6 seems pretty solid. I've used MSE a couple of times before and it is pretty good as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, particularly paired with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. :)

AVG is the best free antivirus, it has been very useful over past a few years.

including but not limited to, deleting core system files and preventing thousands of computers from starting up.
